Sounds unrelated to drivers, if you are getting some sound by putting the headphone jack into the speakers.
To verify that the actual port on the system is working normally you would insert a pair of headphones in to the Speaker port on the computer.
you have noted I think that this gives you sound only from one channel on the headphones - this is a sign of a fault on the system, are you 100% sure that you haven't got the balance set to full left or full right? Also check the port for dust or grit or anything that might block a channel.
Also, have you checked the power source for the speakers? They do need an external power supply for the built in amplifier (your wife's CD player might have a built in amplifier so you would not necessarily need to use one with this)
If the AC adapter for the speakers isn't OK, this might be causing the problem?
If you now have installed all drivers and utilities, you will probably have in Icon in your task bar, "Sound Effects". If you doubleclick this icon, an applet should open up where you cansetup your Soundsystem. You should see which jacks are reserved for what (depending on which configuration you select, these jacks can change!). You can select what type of speaker system you are using etc. Play around with these settings and test it. I'm sure at least one of these settings should apply to your system and get your sound working!
Hi dgs123,
i suppose you have a front panel on your hp so ,take your manual and check all cable connections on your mobo especially those for the sound front panel, check also all jumpers,,,,
>>if I put my headphone plug partially in the front slot I get sound from one of the speakers<< there is a cable misconfig ,,,unplug all cables to the front panel out of your mobo and thest your onboard-soundcard once again,,,
later

I noticed that noone has asked if by chance in the properties of the sound card....is it set to only go through a digital connection? If thats the case then it won't send sound to an analog pair of speakers. It should be located in the advanced button of the sound mixer or something to that effect. Let me know. and I hope that helps!!
MoBo?? does that mean motherboard? Im surely a novice at this...lol...anyhow yes when the speakers(amplified) are plugged into the back port (out) w/all the volumes turned up max (pc&speakers) i can barely hear sound(but can hear it) I have downloaded all the drivers from hp that i thought would help i have even un-installed and re-installed the device (via the pc not physically) with the speakers still pluged in the back i can take my headphones and partially plug them into the front port and the sound volume increases but only in the right channel...so im still lost but i think that perhaps the sound card is bad...dont know how things go bad when you havent used them but that my luck with computers..any more suggestions would be great
If you oonly partially plug something in, it is very likely you will only have sound on one channel. You should really plug it in fully.
Also play around with the soundsystem settings I explained earlier. In there you can normally select what is output on which port (front / back etc). You also select what type of sound system you have, like 2 speakers or more. That will influence the type of output you get as well. Often you can also select between digital and analog output. For normal speakers select analog. As I said, just play around with these settings. I'm almost sure your sound works OK.
Yes, MoBo is motherboard or mainboard.
hi dgs ,
did your cd drive work properly before installing the new audio card?,,,regarding to :
>>i have also notice that the cd doesn't work at all load a cd...blinks once...then nothing<<
-----
>>my Multi-Channel Sound Manager file is empty<< what kind of loudspeakers do you currently use stereo or multichannel ones?
regarding to >>Speakers work fine with the wifes cd player<< i supose stereo speakers, then your soun sheme must be selected as Stereo/headfone speakers(rindi),,,,,
-----
Did you make any other hardware changes to your pavillion before installing the speakers,,,check once again the cables and the jumper settings tp your ide/atapi drives,,,see also the BIOS settings and also for IRQ misconfigs,,,,
-----
>> well I got sound...very very low sound even with the speakers turned up << where did you plug the speakers in the line-out plug or in the speakers plug one?
-----
even if windows restarts you hear no system sound?
i think the most reasonable suggestion is from nobus:
buy a stereo pci sound card ,,uninstall all these realtek codec from your system disable onboard sound in bios and procced with the installation with the pci card,,,
some suggestions for pci 4 channel or 4+1 soundcards:
http://www.newegg.com/app/
http://shop2.outpost.com/s
cu
ok ,be carefull when installing the card ,there are often problems, when you attend to install a pci card but there is also an onboard soundcard,,,you must disable the onboard sound chip in BIOS!PCI and onboard souncards cannot run parallel in most of the common cases.
Buying a new pci card belogs to nobus ! :)
Good luck!
Sorry to hear you had to give up, I personally hate to step around a problem without solving it.
I think I'm having a similar problem, that's why I mention it.
My AC'97 stopped working for me in XP at some point (I reviewed my software/hardware installs and nothing fits with when my sound stopped working). Luckily, I have a dual-boot with Server 2003 and the sound works in there.
I've investigated the problem to the extent that it's making me sick to even think about it anymore, but I may be able to help you a little (or, at least, if you wanna try to fix your old setup.)
If you go into the device manager, double-click on the AC''97 sound driver and open the properties tab. Expand the "Audio Devices" node and double-click on your audio device. If the status for the driver is
"Driver is enabled but has not been started"
then you may have a problem with your Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator.
There are several proposed solutions on the net, readily available if you google that status line (make sure to put it in qutoes to match the whole string). But, as a word of warning, I still have the same problem. These solutions worked for everyone else, just not me, as far as I can tell.
Here's something I just found, but haven't tried yet. Maybe you'll find something useful here:
http://www.carobit.com/Sho
(I guess this is moreso for other people with the problem since you have already opted for a new card.)
I seriously wish I was here earlier. You see, I'm a music producer mainly and I'm fascinated with computers as they are the brain of my studio. I have to deal with this kind of stuff all the time.
Here is something you can try if you want to give it a shot or if it's not too late:
Change your speakers because it may be a bad cable. Happens all the time. The reason is that your speaker cable may have a short in it causing only the mono ring of the plug to respond, while the right side (the other ring on the plug) is not even connected. It's an internal thing with the cable. Basically, this is why when you have the plug halfway in, it works, and when it completely in, it doesn't. It happened to me this morning when I was using a RCA - 1/4" cable. It was just a bad cable.
If this doesn't work then I'd say get rid of the card.

Sounds like (no pun intended) you have a problem with new technology and old. Old audio jumper wires used a shared-ground between the right and left channels. Newer "stuff" is separating the ground to better process "surround" type logic. Based on the test that your earphone works when partially plugged suggests that you are getting one channel that's getting a "short" when the plug is pushed in. Make sure you're using the correct wires and that the internal cables match the polarity.
Hi, I know this is closed but just in case people like me are still wrestling with this I thought I'd add my solution. I had similar issues with Realtek AC97 soundcard on a Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394. For a change, none of the advice here helped. However I found that none of the F_Audio jumpers were shorted and I discovered that this means that the sound is routed to the front case jack and my case doesn't have one. So I shorted out jumpers 1 and 3 in the mini-diagram below (one each side of the single pin) and it worked fine.

Sorry about the rubish diagram.

Thanks, Clive_Mason.
I was having a problem w/ my sound on my daughters new built system. The sound wasn't working either. I tried every thing that I can think of. So I started digging around the Internet for ideas or other things I didn't do. Lately it was the mobo and shorting out those pins worked. It was a habit I removed them and inserted the front audio connectors. There had been some left over pins.
Once again thanks for your suggestions.

if this is a new build, first check the wiring from the front audio connector to the motherboard.
When you say i checked it all did you check :
-in device manager is the audio device listed? without exclamation marks?
- in control panel>sound and audio under audio tab, is the audio device selected?
- did it work ok before?
-do the speakers work on an other system?
- Do you use the correct output connecter for the speakers? some integrated sound cards have up to 6 connectors
