Question

dlink dwl-g520 drivers and windows xp problem

Asked by: Dark_Raver

I am installing my friends wireless pci card (dlink dwl-g520) into his new pc.
the old pc was a 350MHz hp pavilion running windows xp pro.
the new pc is a pentium 4 2.8, with 256DDR and asus p4vp-mx mobo running the same windows xp pro but integrated sp2.

the card worked fine in his old computer but in this one it seems to be impossible to get it working.
i have tried everything i could think of without resolution.

as far as i can tell, bios assigns an irq to the card but when the drivers are loaded during windows start up, the irq changes, and everything freezes!!

i tried older and newer drivers, disabled xp firewall ( this was the best suggestion from tech support), disabled wireless zero configuration, and also disable the utility that comes with the drivers from starting to make sure they arent causing this.

when i go into safe mode, the card appears fine, and depending which pci slot its in has irq 5 in pci slot 1, and irq 3 in pci slot 3.
it doesn't share the irqs with any other device.

if the card drivers are not installed, even in normal mode, it is also on one of the two irqs. as soon as the drivers are installed, having device manager open, i can see that the irq of the card changes, if it starts with 3 it goes to 19, if 5 then to 15.
the new irqs are not used by any other devices either.
sometimes it crashes right away, sometimes longer, usually under a minute.

sorry for the long post but i wanted to get as much useful info out as possible. if i left anything out, please ask.
i don't know what to do any more, this card has been working fine for a year now in the other pc and never had any issues.

any help or suggestions are very welcome, willing to do just about anything at this point.

First check that the mobo's PCI support version is the same as the wireless card. ( PCI v,2.0, 2.1, 2.2 ) Something like that, it's late and my brain isn't wanting to work.   : /

My bad, this is an old card on new mobo. It SHOULD (haha) be backward compatible.
Try going into the BIOS and Enable PCI BUS CLOCK, and see if that helps.

I looked but was unable to find any sort of setting like that.

This may sound like a stupid question, and if you were talking to their tech support, I can imagine you didn't do this, but I have found that you need to have the card out of the computer, install the drivers, shut down, then install the card.

by: CallandorPosted on 2005-02-04 at 05:53:30ID: 13225342

It's very likely a Windows driver problem, and as eccs19 pointed out, the sequence of installation is important - drivers go in before the actual card.

I did follow the instructions....
install the utility, istall the card and then drivers just as they specify...

that is when i have the device manager out to see what goes on with the irqs, and as soon as the driver installation is complete, providing windows doesn't freeze up for a couple of seconds, i can see the card change its irq.

i have even tried it the other way, card first, install drivers without ever installing the utility, but the effect is the same.

You can try reserving an IRQ for a legacy device in the BIOS.  Do it for an IRQ like 9, 10 or 11.

by: Dark_RaverPosted on 2005-02-04 at 11:09:59ID: 13228798

reserving an irq will not help me as the card doesn't share an irq with any other device, plus i am unable to specify an irq for the card to use.

by: Dark_RaverPosted on 2005-02-04 at 12:24:20ID: 13229475

well, i guess this issue is a lot harder to solve than i thought....

by: eccs19Posted on 2005-02-04 at 12:45:37ID: 13229687

Have you by chance tried changing the option in the BIOS to / from PNP OS or NON PNP OS? (Can't remember the exact term, but some boards you can change this, and it may give you better control of the IRQ's)

by: Jeremy-KitchingPosted on 2005-02-04 at 13:53:07ID: 13230277

Yes, I think eccs19's most recent suggestion will work.  That option will force Windows to use the BIOS IRQs instead of Windows attempting to assign one I believe.

by: Dark_RaverPosted on 2005-02-04 at 14:43:22ID: 13230698

what that option does (pnp os) is that when set to yes, bios only assigns irqs to devices that are needed at boot up.
xp can not reassign irqs for devices because of the way HAL works or something along those lines, because of this, it is recommended to set the PnP OS option to No with xp.

and yes, i tried both ways, still no dice

Oh well, good idea while it lasted.  :-(

Any way you can try another wireless card? It might be that this mobo and card combo don't like each other (it wouldn't be the first time).

Since no one answer was an actual solution, i decided to split the points between users that made useful comments.

I ended up testing it in another pc of his, where it works fine, so now he is in the process of switching data and such between pcs.

thanks for the time and help.
