No beep, no POST, wih new Asus A8V Deluxe, new AMD64 3400+, and old stick of 512MB 333MHz DDR RAM

All cooling fans are spinning on power up.

Here's what I've done:

Double checked all jumpers and set to defaults;

disconnected everything except CPU and one stick of DDR RAM;

checked PSU voltages at both power plugs;

removed and reset the CPU;

removed and reset the RAM;

checked PCI and AGP slots for foreign material;

reversed front panel connectors; and

tried a working AGP VC but got no video signal.

Does anyone have any other ideas short of telling me to replace the MB, which will otherwise be my next step?

Oh yea, I also tried resetting the BIOS (unplugged, removed battery, and set jumper to reset BIOS).

Take the motherboard out of the case and place it on an anti-static mat or piece of cardboard.  Try to boot up with just the CPU and memory to see if you receive the BIOS beep.
did that, thx.

can you test the Ram on another PC? or can you test it with other Ram?
other wise, it would be a bad Mobo or CPU.
it would help if you had another available pc for testing purposes. try to isolate each part to determine if which is defective.
tjvetter,

Have you tried to boot with everything plugged off, except for the Mobo ??

If it beeps, then go piece by piece, starting with the CPU, then the Ram, then the Floppy. I somewhere it stpos beeping, maybe you have found the deffective part !

Best Regards !

Well, the Athlon 64 3400+ is a socket 754 cpu, and your mainboard is Socket 939 for AMD Athlon 64FX / Athlon 64. Earlier BIOS may boot up with single channel memory only.

Are you sure about the cpu? Please see thess pages > http://www2.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/1,,30_182_869_9460%5E9461,00.html
http://www.asus.com/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx

Note BIOS beep codes and post results here.
Try other ram.
mcp_jon:  can I get a beep with no CPU and no RAM?  Is that what you are suggesting?

kcarrim:  the CPU is the 939 version.  The RAM was taken from another machine in which it was working.  I have another stick I can take out of the other machine and try.  But, should I do what I think mcp_jon is suggesting first?
Have you by chance tried a different Power Supply?  Seems like you have tried all the obvious things but the PSU.  If it was purchased new, could be defective, if it's used, could be the new setup is just to much for your old and possibly failing PSU.
The pc would beep with no ram or display card. With no processor, there would be nothing!

Try another cpu or test your cpu in another system. If the cpu is ok, replace the mainboard.
Yes go and try the other ram first
eccs19 -- it's a new Ultra 400W PSU.  I checked voltages at MB and they look ok.
kcarrim -- can't check the CPU in another unit b/c I have only one AMD64 MB.

Yes, do you hear a beep without everything, except the board ??

Best Regards !
Oh, and the Cpu !!

Best Regards !
Did you try other ram? Did you test the power supply?
All -- Just spoke with ASUS tech support (502-995-0883).  Told me I need an upgraded bios chip (I have 1008, need at least 1009).  They are shipping it out to me.  I will report on results.

Apparently TigerDirect is shipping a bundle that includes the AMD64 3400+ CPU's with AV8's that can't support with the old bios.  Geez.
If I was you, I would call Tiger direct and bitch about it.  They may not know there is an issue, and for that matter if you bitch enough, perhaps they will cut you a break or something.  I've delt with them in the past, and have had not issues myself.
Iap, I would make some noise so that they would, at least, Call the customers to provide them this Feedback !!

Or... try out the other steps !

Best Regards !
Oh.... I would also give a try about testing with a new PSU !!

(You never know )!

Best Regards !
In my previous posts ""Earlier BIOS may boot up with single channel memory only.""
Motherboard :  A8V Deluxe   CPU :  Athlon 64 3400 (CG version) (Socket939)   Since BIOS :  1009
kcarrim says "Motherboard :  A8V Deluxe   CPU :  Athlon 64 3400 (CG version) (Socket939)   Since BIOS :  1009."

Yes, I saw that on the ASUS website for MB/CPU compatibility.  I didn't think I would need to check on this bundle at all, no less in that kind of detail.  Maybe I'll call TigerDirect sales and ask whether the A8V supports the 3400+.
I called TD sales and asked whether the A8V Deluxe board in their bundle with the 3400+ CPU had the BIOS chip needed to support the CPU.  First I was told that it did.  Then I told them that they sold me one that didn't.  I was put on hold while this was checked.  They came back with, "yes, that is still a problem.  You can return it if you want."

Weird that they know the bundle will not work, but continue to advertise and sell it.

I am waiting on the 1009 bios chip from ASUS.
Well at least they offered to return it, instead of saying you were SOL.
My A8V works great.... phew. It's a highly awarded board.. good choice ;-)
Worst case, strip everything down to bare bones. Even take out the memory to see if it will beep.

Sometimes the cases have lips on them and the board has to be mounted properly or their may be shorts. Good to check everything

Jeff
All:

Well, I got the 1009 bios form ASUS and now I am up and running.  Got all the hardware installed, working on software now.  Doing a clean XP install and got lots of updates and software to set up.  Thanks for all the suggestions.

Shame on TigerDirect.
No reply? Please return to question. :-)
???
Did the BIOS solve your problem? Are you awarding any points? Please close question if the problem has been solved. :-)
Yes, the BIOS chip was the solution and that was provided by ASUS, so I am not awarding points here for this one.  How do I close the question?
