SATA Installation - A8V Motherboard - Driver Error
Hi Everyone,
I have a problem that is driving me raving bozonkers. I am building my first PC.
Athlon 3500+
Assus A8V
2 gig Samsung DDR400
1 160 gig Western Digital SATA Drive
1 80 gig Samsung SATA drive
1 120 Gig Seagate IDE Drive
1 Plextor DVD/RW Drive SATA
I wasn't planning to install the Seagate drive in the box. That was going to be my backup drive via USB 2.0. However, I followed all the now familiar directions and set the bios controller to IDE because I wasn't using RAID. I used F6 and installed the drivers from the MOBO cd. Windows wouldn't recognize the driver. Downloaded the drivers from Asus and tried again. Multiple times. Different BIOS settings. ALWAYS Same result. Nada. Windows cannot find a HD.
In desparation, I installed windows on my Seagate IDE drive planning to ghost the install to the SATA drive. But I still can't get WIndows to recoqnize the SATA drives. Everytime Windows boots up, I get a Found New Hardware wizard even though have installed VIA Serial ATA Raid controller and WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE controller.
When I go to the Device Manager, under Other Devices, there is this entry - Promise SATA Console SCSI Processor Device. For the life of me, I can't find the driver to fix that error.
I had formerly thougth that my SATA controller on the MOBO was faulty, but my Plextor drive works. I don't know what to do. I have tried all four SATA connectors on the motherboard as well.

Hmmmmmmm... Go into the motherboard BIOS and look for SATA settings and make sure they are Enabled or Auto. Check that the SATA's are in the BootOrder also.
note: the setting are in different places in different BIOS's, so look everywhere.

the latest asus boards do not need to install the sata driver.
i would suggest to set the boot order priority (section boot) to cd first, then try installing.
if it does not work, disconnect your ide drive during the install

Yes, they show up during the bios boot process.

I was sure I have all the BIOS SATA settings right, but I will look and check again. Thanks so much for your help.

i would suggest connecting one drive at the time, certainly for installing purposes. When that is done, and all drivers installed, connect the next drive, partition and format it, if needed, and handle the following one.

What does this sound like to you? I tried using Western Digital's disk utitilty to create a boot drive on the sata disk but it can't select any SATA drive? Very puzzling.

That was one of my tests, unfortunately. I tried both drives together and each drive individually. Was at this crittur all day yesterday. :-(

you can have of course, bad disks ( i doubt it) or a bad mobo (DOA) in this case, i would send it back and request a new one. The bad disks (if any) can be tested on another SATA compatible system
Try unplugging the IDE drive. Had this problem on an Asus not too long ago and that's how we had to install XP on the SATA drive.

I concluded the mobo was bad after following the advice so kindly gven here on this forum. Thank so for your help.
I called Asus to discuss tech support and RMA numbers and was given the proper DRIVERS of all things. The manual was unclear for a first-time computer builder like me.

However, I still haven't been able to get Windows XP (Pro 2nd Edition) to install on either SATA drive and I tried booting from a CD drive and installing from Windows.
Is my mobo defective by any chance?
