The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Finding a replacement processor for AMD Athlon XP 2600 +266 FSB

Asked by GMichaelR in General Computer Systems

My son-in-law has an HP Pavillion a287x desktop computer that will no longer POST upon startup. I was able to eliminate the motherboard, power supply,  peripherals and memory as being the problem.

I called Newegg to find out about purchasing a new processor and was referred to the manufacturer. When I called Hewlett Packard, I was quoted a price of $599 for an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor! That's ridiculous... My son-in-law would be better off to purchase a new computer which is probably what HP is hoping for.

The defective processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2600 running @ 2.1 GHz with 266 FSB.

I checked AMD website and the only Athlon XP  processor that they currently  sell are XP-M processors. Would an XP-M 2600 processor  be an acceptable replacement for the XP 2600? I hate the idea of having to go to ebay to purchase a used processor, but would rather do that before paying HP's price.

Newegg does sell an AMD Athlon 2800 +333 MHz FSB. I realize that operating it with a decreased FSB of 266 MHz will decrease the overall speed of the processor. Does anyone have suggestions as to what route I should take?
