I got a USB HDD one week back and I tried to plugin to the Desktop at work and it does not detect this device. Plugged into the laptop and it shows Unknown device.
I got doubt that the drive is problem but it works perfectly at my home system with XP SP2. All system that I tried are XP SP2. Tried on defferent desktop system at office and it works fine. This USB HDD does not work only on two systems (Desktop at office and a laptop).
Then what I did was I uninstalled the USB 2.0 drivers and as soon as I uninstalled the system detected the Mass storage device and it worked fine but it worked slowly as there were no drivers. As soon as I install the USB 2.0 drivers the USB Hdd does not work.
So, I tried a lot to find out what is wrong and after much research on registry I found that there is a ID for this USB Mass storage in the registry. I copied this id from registry on the system where it works fine and imported them to the Desktop at work.
Now, the USB Hdd works fine on my work desktop without any problem with the new id entered in registry.
Now the problem is that the laptop does not detect this USB Hdd. I have tried the registry method but still it does not work. Today I have formatted completely and installed SP2 and still it does not work. Laptop USB is working fine as all other devices work on all the USB ports.
The registry key that I copied is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentCon
trolSet\Se
rvices\USB
STOR\Enum
0 reg_sz USB\Vid_04cf&Pid_8818\100
Can anyone help me with this problem? Why are these two system not detecting the USB HDD when other system with similar chipset and OS are working fine?
I know that the system is not problem nor is the USB HDD. Something to do with OS and the USB drivers.
Second problem is that the USB HDD works fine on all other system with XP SP2, after some time I get message "Delayed Write error" unable to write to the drive. This comes on all the system having XP SP2. I have tried disabling caching the drive but that does not work. Thank you
