Question

Local area connection!

Asked by: woodendude

When I boot up my computer, once up it searches for a local area network connection. I'm not one a network, it's a stand alone home pc. If I go into network connections the is my regular dsl internet connection icon and the local area connection icon. LAN is apperently connected with limited or no connectivity, if I disable this it stops my interent connection also. How do I remove this connection path as it slows down the computer whenn searching for a network at boot up?
IBM E series 205 x server (home pc usage not server)
p4 2.66 ghz.
1 gb. ram
dsl internet connection.
If you need any other info ask.

Thanks

When I right click on the LAN icon delete is grayed out.

by: mwnnjPosted on 2005-09-22 at 05:02:35ID: 14935859

you must have such options in the BIOS:
boot from LAN ,also in the boot priority
wake up from lan /PME wake up
just disable this settings and your pci will not seek for these options every time you want to start up your pc

You may have a driver for another network device installed, and that one may be hidden.  To delete hidden drivers,

Start->Run->CMD
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
START DEVMGMT.MSC
Click View/Show all hidden devices, and choose the ones to delete.

you meant your problem is on bootup,so the BIOS setting didn't solve the probelm, then try out:
windows explorer->tools->Folder Options->View->disable/uncheck : Automatically search for network folders and printers.

On my single NIC machine, I have:
- one for the NIC itself (3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller)
- Direct Parallel
- WAN Miniport (IP)
- WAN Miniport (L2TP)
- WAN Miniport (PPTP)

I don't know what those Packet Scheduler miniport entries are.  The PPPOE may be necessary for the protocol you are using, and I would get rid of the Microsoft tv/video connection and the RAS Async Adapter.

by: mwnnjPosted on 2005-09-23 at 11:35:56ID: 14947126

i have the WAN Miniport (PPPOE) too on my system ,the miniport schedulers are lited on my system  under WAN,,,
regarding the ras async adapter/Microsoft tv/video connection :
RAS Async Adapter - interface transferring network packets over the analog modem ->so i think you must definitely uninstall it since it's useless if do not use any kind of analog modem.
Microsoft tv/video connection :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q303302&

which hopefully explains your 2.nd LAN connection ,try to uninstall these two entries and check out for changes, both of the entries are microsoft's "tools".

i found a dditionally a driver for your netcard, could be it can be usefull in the future:

Thanks Folks problem solved, hope you're okay with the split points. I feel both helped equally in solving my problem, I had performed things suggested by both of you and had not rebooted and when I did problem solved. And honestly I'm not going to revert back to where I was and start over again trying to figure out what exactly did it.

Cheers
Woody
