Need program that displays cpu fan speed

Hi all. I need a program that will enable me to monitor the rpm's of my cpu cooling fan. I have a new Dell 670 $6,500. workstation and the fan ramps up and slows down sometimes 5 times per minute. I want to record the frequency of this anomaly. Thus, the need for some type of monitoring program. The fan DOES have an rpm out lead and the diagnostic program does display the speed at one given moment. Just not constantly. Anyone have a clue where I could find such a utility? There is a bit of a rush since I've only had this system for a few days. If Dell can't fix this disturbing sound then it goes back to them. Thanks!

Hi twotwenty,

I checked out the "Motherboard Monitor" program. It does not work on the Dell 670 for some reason. I have an older workstation, as 620, that it works fine on. SOOOO close, but... Hopefully you might know of another program that will monitor fan speed on the cpu fan. I appreciate your suggestion.

Hi all. I tried the Intel program. It does not even install. Too bad. Has ALL the right monitors. Motherboard Monitor and Speedcheck do not work either. Both system fans do have four wires. I'm guessing ground, hot, fan speed input and fan speed output. Don't know for sure.

UPDATE: Dell sent me two new fans. Both were different brands than the original to fix the problem. They are a bit quieter, but the problem still remains.

Yes, I DO want a software program that will continuously monitor the system fan and the cpu fan rpms.  Hard to believe that there isn't one available a LITTLE easier than it appears to be. I've spent a lot of time searching but....nothing so far. I'll check out the Instrumentation package.

Dell is now sending me a new cpu and heatsink. I am THINKING that either the temperature output of the cpu is not correct OR that the BIOS is not programmed intelligently enough to SLOWLY ramp up and down the speed to the fans.

Dell knows that they are working within the first 21 days return limit. I made a recording of the noise but Dell didn't even want to hear it. They just said they would send a new cpu. Hope it works. If anyone finds the software PLEASE let me know. Thanks all!
In case anyone wants to hear what this puppy does and sounds like:  www.777max.com/sendtodell.mp3
Been gone a few days, but just returned and listed to your recording.

I'd send it back.  Period!!    That cannot possibly be correct -- and I'd NOT let the 21 day return period go by.

There are at least TWO other Dell workstation owners with the same EXACT problem. Dell sent 2 new fans....no change. Dell sent a new processor and heat sink. No change. Then they wanted to send a "refurbished" motherboard. This on an almost $6,000 omputer. I declined. Tomorrow I will have the NEW replacement to test out. Hopefully the problem will have disappeared. If not, then I suppose it is something programed incorrectly in bios or in firmware somewhere on the motherboard? I'm no expert, obviously. Just hoping that it works. Thanks all!!!
Thank you much.    : )

I take it the new mobo worked?   ; )
Hi all. Nope, I refused a new motherboard. They send an exact replacement new computer. The new one is substantially better. I still had to remove the original cpu fan and replace it with the  fan they sent as a replacement for the first unit. The computer DOES still cycle the fan an a rate that is NOT correct for a cooling fan but will work. There is NO need to ramp up and down 6 times per minute at times. But it is now VERY intermittent, only doing it for an hour a day. I'm guessing it is the fan controller chip that was programmed with firmware written by someone that didn't know what they were doing. If it still bugs me I'll just replace it with a system that has fan, thermal sensor, digital readout and adjustment. But for now I'm happy. The computer is in it's new home under a desk with Sonex soundproofing. Now if that spider on the wall would just wear slippers so that I couldn't hear him STOMPING around on the wall!
Thanks all!!

You will need to open a question in the NET TA, for that.
