Question

When to choose Hard disc Jumper setting Master or Master with CLJ ?

Asked by: DutchExpert

Hi
I am playing with my PC set-up and want to change Primary IDE devices... So I understand I need to adjust my jumper settigns on my maxtor hard disc..
I found good information on this site.. and through the link to http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/documentation/jumper_settings/style_a1.htm

My main question is.. should I use Master or Master with CLJ set-up. I do not know the difference, please clarify when I should use which setting:From the website listed above
 (Master)
The vertical jumper over the J50 pins is configuring the drive as a Master.

 (Master with CLJ)
The vertical jumper over the J50 pins is configuring the drive as a Master.
The vertical jumper over the J46 pins is in the Cylinder Limitation position (CLJ).

Need an answer soon, so I listed 500 points for this probably simple question.
thanks in advance.

DutchExpert,
Using CLJ will limit the cylinders in use on the drive (useful for older machines that won't recognize such large hard drives). If you want to take advantage of the full size of the drive, use just the Master jumper config

DutchExpert,

DVation191 answered your main question ==> you do not need to use the CLJ setting (unless, of course, this is on an older system and you were already using it with your previous jumper settings).

However, assuming that you are using this drive on a system that supports Cable Select, and using it with an 80-pin cable (you should be), then the setting you should use is Cable Select.   That way the master/slave configuration is automatically determined by its position on your cable -- Master if at the end; Slave if in the middle.   This is generally preferable to specific assignments, as it will then work fine if you later move the drive and don't change the jumpers.

Even if question is answered a little more information:

A CLJ Cylinder Limitation Jumper reports the harddisk as smaller, than it really is. Older drives 2 GB, newer drives 32 GB.

This is used if the BIOS in the computer can not recognize the harddisk(because of size), so you actually fool the BIOS.

Next step is adding an "overlay" software, coming with the harddisk or downloaded from HD manufacturers homepage., because we want to utilize the entire drivespace.

This little piece of software is placed in the boot-sector and is telling the OS the real size of the harddisk, just like the BIOS normally does.

But if your BIOS recognises the HArddisk ok, you wont need it.

You should not be using CLJ in any modern system.  This was a provision to allow modern drives to be used for replacement purposes in VERY old systems (1990's).  Not necessary in any modern system (and "modern" here goes back about half a decade or more), and in fact it wlll prevent you from using the entire hard drive.
