Question

BSOD with Nv4_disp error with STOP:0xoooooooEA error code. Will Windows XP Pro reinstall fix this? I've done about everything else!

Asked by: RoadrunninRN

Hi,
This is my first time here and would appreciate any help/advice.  I have a Dimension Desktop 4600 with Pentium 4 3.0Ghz Processor, 512 MB Ram, NVIDIA GeFOrce FX5200 vidoe card, running Windows XP Pro, SP 2.

I have had this system for nearly 2 years, used on a daily basis without any problems.  4 days ago, I go to get on the computer (it stays on all the time-so I just have to logon to my user name), I move the mouse to go to my user name, and the screen flickers BADLY, goes black, comes back OK when I stop moving the mouse.  I turned the computer off, then restarted it, same problem, so I restart again and then get the BSOD saying that windows was shut down to prevent damage, problem caused by Nv4_disp.  Device Driver stuck in an infinite loop.  Tech info:  ***STOP: oxooooooEA ()x82CBB3C8, 0x82E64558, 0xF88F5cbc, 0x00000001)   Physical memeory was dumped to minidump file, and said to contact sys admin or tech support for further assistance.

I was able to log on to the system in Safe Mode with Networking and tried to troubleshoot the problem myself.  (I am no expert by any definition, but I do have to deal with our computer system problems at work and am currently in the middle of a major hardware and software installation, so I am learning more and more each day about trouble shooting).

Before contacting tech support, I did a Google search, saw lots of listings for this error, some saying it was the card, some saying it was the drivers.  I went to NVIDIA site, and saw that a new driver was issued 12/10/05.  I uninstalled the current driver, and installed the new driver, and then attempted to restart in normal mode.  This didn't work, I got the same BSOD again.

OK-- to make a 4 day long story a bit shorter....I contacted tech support, and of course we went thru the whole driver unistall/install thing again, they insisted that I log on in VGA Enabled Mode and do the driver thing again, that it would work this time.  It didn't. Next online chat with tech support--interventions requested were to remove and reseat the card, and then reset the BIOS by going into setup.  This didn't work either.  3rd online chat with tech support-- log off and log on in the boot utility partition and run test on the video card--get back to tech support with the error codes so they can order me a new card.  Ran the "test"--it said--...."this is not a test or diagnostic. Only a confirmation that the indicated device was detected by DellDiag".  This morning, I got back online with tech support, told them the message I got.  This time I was sent a Google page which was a tech forum of sorts, with a link for NV4loopfix.  I was assured that this BETA patch would fix the problem, but if not, I would need to reinstall Windows XP Pro, and that would certainly fix the problem.

The patch did not work, and I am hesitant to do a WIndows XP Pro reinstall at this point when the ONLY problem is with this NVIDIA card and/or driver. Fortunatley for me, I have integrated video on the motherboard, not great, but better than flickering, black screens, and the BSOD!

I have looked through the posts on here, and looked at the various M$ links that have been provided to see if any would answer this question.  Even the M$ link ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341 ) for doing the reinstall states "• Do not use a repair or in-place upgrade if you suspect a problem with a third-party device, and the latest device drivers are currently installed for the device. "  I do suspect a problem with the card since I have done all of the troubleshooting, patch, etc, with no improvement.

Please advise as to what I should do next.

Hi RoadrunninRN,

The windows saves the dump files to the folder \windows\minidump ....

You can use a free service like rapidshare to post the minidump files : http://www.rapidshare.de/

Post the link given to your files.

Ok so can if you can get into safe mode can you do a restore point to when you know that the pc was working...

Also did you resently updated your windows (just out of curiosity) I know that microsoft did an update on a security bug that was related to graphic rendering that was released 4 or 5 days ago....

The culprit maybe faulty ram, videdo card or video display driver. If you provide the minidumps at the webspace, I can find out the culprit.

Thanks for being willing to look at the minidump files.  Here are the links (3 of them-- I guess I lost count of the BSOD thru this mess).

I thought the same thing about the restore point, but that didn't fix it either.   I have some updates available from M$, but I have not yet installed them.  With all of this video mess, I have not had time to read up on what they are.  I do have that update you mentioned sitting in my automatic updates queue.  If I install it, will it help, or hurt?  I am hesitant to do anything until I resolve the video problem.

One  minidump is crashed at nt!READ_REGISTER_ULONG+0x6 and one minidump is crashed with double fault. I believe that it is hardware problem at the display card or motherboard.

With everything I have done to try to fix the drivers, nothing has worked, so I feel it is most likely the card, ,especially since no other errors are occuring anywhere with the card out of the system.  Now, how I can get tech support to send me another card, since I am under warranty for more than 2 more years, that is another issue.  They were insistent that I had to run the nv4loopfix patch and then if I still had the problem, I was to reinstall Windows XP Pro.  I do not feel that the reinstall is going to correct the problem, but rather most likely cause me further stress!  Is there any type of diagnostic I could run on the card, while in Safe Mode?  That is the only way I can run Windows if I put the NVIDIA card back in the tower.

There are 3 mini dumps.  Does the 3rd one match either of the first 2?

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-15 at 08:07:21ID: 15705132

Another thing I should tell you all- just for the sake of making sure I had done everything exactly right, I was trying to log on in VGA Enabled Mode-- and the screen stayed black, no video at all.  But, I was able to restart the computer and go into Safe Mode with Networking while using the NVIDIA card.  Does that help to pinpoint the issue?

Run 3DMark 2005 to test your video card.

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-15 at 08:38:45ID: 15705261

No, I have never changed any settings on the video card.  It is set exactly as it came in the system.  Will 3DMark 2005 do anything to my sytem?  I have never used this or heard of it (not into gaming), so I just want to be sure it will be OK.  I have enough issues to deal with without adding to it.

by: cpc2004Posted on 2006-01-15 at 08:52:07ID: 15705292

3DMark is the utility to do the benchmark test of a graphic card.

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-15 at 09:07:57ID: 15705334

I did a Google Search-- now I am checking outthe various sites to download 3DMARK 2005 from.  ANy suggestions for a reputable site?

Hi RoadrunninRN,

In the analyse of the dumpfiles i agree with cpc2004.

For your question take a look at this :

OK--  I have downloaded and installed 3DMark 2005, as well s the December 2005 DirectX from M$ site.  I tried to run 3DMark, but I got this message:

IDIrect3D9: GetDeviceCaps failed: Not Available  (D3DERR_Not Available)

What does that mean?

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-15 at 13:00:11ID: 15706262

OK-- I had downloaded the DirectX December 2005 file, and that gave me the error as I stated before.  So now, I went to the M$ link above and downloaded DirectX 9.0c while I was in Normal Mode, connected to my integrated video.  When I finished the download, I started the 3DMark without any problems. I shut down the computer, put the NVIDIA card back in, booted in on Safe Mode with Networking, and tried to start 3DMark again.  I got the same error.  I download the DirectX 9.0c again while in Safe Mode, and then again tried to restart the 3DMark again.  I still get the same error.

IDIrect3D9: GetDeviceCaps failed: Not Available  (D3DERR_Not Available)

What should I do next?

I have increased the points on this question, because it seems to be much more difficult to diagnose than I originally anticipated.

Thanks for all of the help!

Hi RoadrunninRN,

Lets se your directx settings .... open a command prompt and run the command:

dxdiag

If they ask to connect to internet say yes.

When all the information is on, select "save all information" , save the log/txt file and post them here.

Did you alradey tried this:

1 - Download the latest drivers, i think is this :

ForceWare Release 80 -Version: 81.98
Release Date: December 21, 2005

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html

2 - Disable all Anti Virus and Anti Spyware software.
3 - Remove all the drivers and software from nvidia
4 - Run NVCleaner: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=167
5 - Run Drive Cleaner: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
6 - Go to :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
and verify that has nothing about nvidia, if exists use the uninstall infornation to do a manual uninstall.
7 - If exists manually delete the nvidia drivers, so go to your Windows\System32 and Windows\System32\Drivers directories, and find and delete or rename all files beginning with 'NV...'
8 - Reboot
9 - Install the files you download ....

Dear roadrunningrn

I think that you should replaced your video card we had done everything that we could think of and even if we spent another 2 weeks we will not be able to fix your card issue

we have cover the basics from rolling back old drivers to system restore point to ready dump files i will suggest that if you want to keep troubleshooting we will help you but in the mean time you should tell your customer support that you would like to have the card replaced and we can wait for the card and swap it and see if that works....

There will be 2 possible outcomes

1 the card works (great! the card was damange)

2 the card doesnt work (crap!!!Maybe your agp slot <- if your card is agp -> is damage) If your card is PCI then i suggest switching PCI slots.

Please let us know what you want to do

I would like to try what Miguel suggested first.  If I still have the problem, I can then contact Dell and give them all of the information for what has been done.  Surely at this point they should just replace the card.  I have not reinstalled Windows XP Pro as that had requested, but I honestly do not believe that will resove anything.  More than likely it would cause more problems.

When I get home from work this evening I will try Miguel's sugestion, and let everyone here know what happens.

Thanks for all of the advice!  Have a great day!

Hi RoadrunninRN,

And one last thing you could try is trying to boot from a live cd and see waht happens ... something like knoppix for example ....

:(  This is me pouting!

I did all of the steps above, and it gave me the BSOD AGAIN!  So--now I need to contact Dell.  What I really, REALLY need to know is this.  The last communication that I had with Dell was on Saturday morning, when I was told that the nvloopfix would fix my problem, but if not, I needed to reinstall Windows XP Pro, and that would DEFINITELY fix it.  I don't beleive it will, as I am more and more convinced it is this card.

Does anyone out there think a Windows reinstall is needed???

This is a hardware error at vid or m/b.  Attach the latest minidump at the webspace. Maybe I can confirm whether the vid or m/b is faulty.

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-17 at 05:45:50ID: 15719166

I will post the latest minidump this evening when I get home.   It is the same error I have been getting all along.  Would any of the other 3 manydumps have the information?

cpc2004

Here is the minidump file from last night: http://rapidshare.de/files/11257436/Mini011606-01.dmp.html

I appreciate everyone's help with this.  Hopefully the minidump will confirm what the problem is so that I can get in touch with Dell.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi RoadeunninRN,

In my analyzes appears :

CUSTOMER_CRASH_COUNT:  1
BUGCHECK_STR:  0xEA
LAST_CONTROL_TRANSFER:  from f74eb740 to 804dc909

But lets wait for the cpc2004 replay ....

The lateset minidump also crashes at nVidia Display Card Driver and it is quite current. The author tries a lot of version of nVidia Display card driver. Bugcheck code EA can be caused by software error at nVidia display card driver, faulty vid, faulty ram or faulty m/b.  From the minidumps, I believe it is faulty vid or m/b.

It is worthwhile to run memtest to stress test the ram.

OK-- I'll give that a try.  I'll post results tomorrow.  Thanks!

Hi RoadrunninRN,

You can get Memtest86 here: http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

Miguel

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-18 at 06:38:41ID: 15729219

I ran the memtest all night, it was at 21130% coverage with 0 errors this am.

Replace the video card.

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-18 at 09:05:48ID: 15730714

I will contact Dell this evening and request that they replace the card.  And this time, I won't let them insist on telling me I need to reinstall windows!!  I will tell them that I have consulted the "experts", and we have done all the trobleshooting there is to do, and that the card is the next step.

When I get the new card......if there are any problems that continue--does that mean I need to get the m/b replaced, since that was the other potential culprit?

by: MiguelSilvestrePosted on 2006-01-18 at 09:43:50ID: 15731143

Hi RoadrunninRN,

Yes, but one step at the time ... let's try the new card.

Miguel

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-18 at 11:55:42ID: 15732396

Thanks---maybe there won't be any more problems once I get the new card

by: RoadrunninRNPosted on 2006-01-18 at 12:20:06ID: 15732611

I want to thank you all for all of your help.  I went ahead and graded and split the points for this question so that I could close it out.  When I get my new card, if there are any problems.....I'll be back!!

For now-- I have to get back focused on my computer problems at work...(domain issues, user rights, run time errors, etc)  I may have to come back here for help again!

Thanks again!!  Have a great day!
