by the way, i have seen multiple issues with TrendMicro's spyware removal. it seems to be buggy. sorry you are having this issue because spyware removal should not be so destructive.

Browse All TopicsHi there. I had a machine that was full of spyware and viruses, so I ran Trends online virus/spyware checker. It found a bunch of stuff and "cleaned" it, but unfortunately, when the machine rebooted, it just got stuck in an endless loop of trying to reboot. It could get past the first few system files when trying to load Windows (Normal mode or Safe mode). So I decided to try a repair with the install disk. But for some reason, it could even get past loading the Windows XP install disk (so I could get to the repair function). It would just stop after the part that says "Press F6 to install RAID drivers" (or whatever).
So I thought maybe the Windows install was so screwed that it hosed the whole machine, and I wiped the hard drive completely. I then inserted the XP install CD, but it still would not load the CD all the way. Sometimes it stops after the F6 prompt... sometimes it gets to the part where it says "Starting Windows" and sometimes it gives me some long error about how a file on the D:\ drive (the install CD) caused an error... but either way, I can't get the XP install disk to work at all. Basically, the computer is a paperweight at this point.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I have not successfully loaded Windows back on to the machine yet. I can't do this because the XP CD never finishes loading (in order for me to install windows). The time is was hanging during restart was right after the spyware removal ran and it wouldn't reboot. I have since formatted the drive, but have gotten no further than that.
I have also tried resetting the jumper for the BIOS, but that still doesn't help. I don't understand how it would stop an XP CD from loading? Where would the problem lie?
Btw... I have tried this with two different XP CD (one Home and one Pro) and both were the original copies (not burned CD's). Same results.

Have you tried another cd drive. Perhaps test it with a live cd like Knoppix

Ok - if the PC does not read the cd right when installing from cd, there are not many options :
-bad cd - you tried another one, so, let's leave it for now
-bad cd drive : you can try another cd drive on this PC, or test your drive on another PC
-bad ide cable - try anohter cable
-bad Ram : test it with memtest86+ from : http://www.memtest.org/
those options remain :
-bad ide cable - try anohter cable
-bad Ram : test it with memtest86+ from : http://www.memtest.org/
Sorry, disregard my post above -if the cd could not be loaded on another PC, it is a bad drive, or a bad cd.
try knoppix, or ultimate boot cd :

Well... it just goes to show that almost any concievable problem can be caused by bad RAM. After trying different CD drives and IDE cables and HDD's and install CD's and everything else on planet earth, I finally had the idea to try reseating the RAM (in a different DIMM slot). After that, the Windows CD loaded just fine.
Back in the day I used to us cheap RAM in my builds.... not anymore... I stopped that long ago, but this machine is a hold-out from abygone era, so I'm still paying the price for it. :op
Points go to nobus for being the first to mention bad RAM (a comment which I overlooked, unfortunately).

to cover bases, is the XP cd a copy or original version?
also, when you "wiped the drive" and reloaded windows, did it successfully complete that process? (it sounds like it did because you say it now sometimes hangs on starting windows)
did you delete your partitions and reformat when you reloaded windows?
