Question

Dell Poweredge 1600sc won't stop beeping

Asked by: LiquidHappyRDM

I am pretty sure I know why it is beeping (I have to rebuild one of the SCSI raided drives) but I was wondering, is there anyway I can turn this eardrum shattering constant beeping off while it is rebuilding the drive?

Is there a RAID BIOS you can boot into. On my old Adaptec RAID controllers you could silence the alarm in there.

You can turn the Alarm Off

Per Dell site the guidance is:

1. Rebuild a failed drive using the Dell™ PowerEdge™ RAID Controller (PERC) and the Dell™ Open Manage™ Server Assistant (DOSA) CD.

NOTICE:  Data loss may occur. Before performing any of the following steps,  ensure that a valid backup is available.

Launch Array Manager Using Dell Server Assistant CD

Boot to the Dell Server Assistant CD.
The Dell Server Assistant menu will appear.
Select the Dell Array Manager Tool in the System Tools section.
The array manager tool will appear.
You can attempt to rebuild a failed drive back into your existing array without replacing the drive by performing the following steps:

PERC Subsystem (AMI RAID controller)

To rebuild the array using the PERC subsystem perform the following steps:

Click through the PERC Subsystem to the Physical Array entry.
Right-click the adapter listed, and click Disable Alarm.

NOTE:  Ensure the alarm is re-enabled once the rebuild is complete. The alarm must be enabled in order to receive an audible notification of an array failure.

Ensure the drive status indicator light is green.

NOTE:  If the drive status indicator is not green and your system does support hot-swapping the drives, remove and reseat the drive. If your system does not support the hot-swapping capability, you must power down the server before reseating the drive.

Expand the PERC Subsystem folder to display the Logical Array group entries.
Click the proper Array Group.
Click the virtual disk containing the failed drive.

NOTE:  Yellow triangles with exclamation points (!) or red circles with (X)s will indicate the failed drive.

Right-click the failed drive.
Choose the Rebuild option.
A warning box appears.
Read the warning and click Yes.
A progress bar appears and the status of the virtual disk changes to Rebuilding.
Once the rebuild process is complete, right click the adapter and choose enable alarm.
Reboot the system.
PERC2 Subsystem (Adaptec RAID Controller)

To rebuild the array using the PERC2 subsystem perform the following steps:

Expand the PERC2 Subsystem folder to display the Logical Array entry.
Click the Array Group containing the virtual disk that is degraded.
Click the virtual disk and right-click on the drive that is in Degraded status.
Choose the Remove Orphan/Dead Disk Segments option.
A warning box appears.
Click Yes.
Right-click the virtual disk that is degraded and choose Configure Hotspare.
The Virtual Disk Hotspare Configuration window appears.
The drive that was just reverted to free space appears listed under the Available Array Disks window.
Highlight the drive and click Add Disk.
The drive now appears under the Assigned Array Disks window.
Click OK.
A progress bar appears and the status of the virtual disk changes to Rebuilding.
Once the rebuild completes, reboot your system

Hope this Helps!!!

I think the answer you are looking for is, unfortunatly no. Get the drive rebuilt as soon as possible. For the redneck approach (not meant to offend anyone) put a large piece of duct tape over that darn speaker until its done. =)

I had the same issue with a Dell PowerEdge 2650 and PERC 3/DC Raid controller. I found the solution in a Dell support forum. Here a link to the thread:http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=pes_hardrive&thread.id=26879&jump=true&c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen

In SCSI PERC cards made by LSI (PERC 3 PCI Cards and all PERC 4), you can silence or disable the alarm from the Raid controlelr BIOS (accessed by CTRL-M during POST).

Go to Objects -> Adapter -> Alarm Control
There you will have three options:

Silence:  Silences the alarm until the next reboot
Disable: Turns the alarm off, you will have to return to this point and enable the alarm if you ever want to hear it again.
Enable: turns the alarm on after is has been disabled

Thanks, sermanre, I had the same problem. It seems that the "silence" option is worthless, since you have to reboot after exiting the utility, the alarm is immediately reenabled. I had to set it to "disable" to get it to shut up while I rebuilt the failed drive.
