video card freeze
Hello, i'm in a big trouble.
I've got recently an ati radeon 9550 agp, in wme it works well but in w2k freezes all the time i run a 3d app or just writing here to EE. In the worst case blocks the sys and need cold restart, in the best case blackens the screen, after that dxdiag tells: Direct3D functionality not available.
I use latest sp4, (latest) dx9, latest ati drivers from ati site Catalyst control center+driver. Also installed anly the driver.
Is there another radeon 9550 driver for w2k?
The system that i need working is a P3/500, intel BX chipset. I think IRQ 11 that video card uses is not in conflict. I disabled the other usb device that shared IRQ 11.
Previously i had nvidia video card on this system.

What kind of power supply do you have ? It may not be performing its best or may not be sufficient. With a new powerful power supply reinstall your drivers and see what happens.
ASKER
I don't think it's the power supply. In wme works well and it is a less economic system.

On alastor website redirect to ati for download drivers.
OK, did you check for updates on your motherboard?
ASKER
In w2k for sure i don't need updates. I recall there were just for w98 or 95.

I used nvidia until now. ATI seems to have a strange driver control panel based upon framework that's required, i'll install the framework again, that from ATI website.
This control panel does not start until give it access to the internet.

I'm telling you these things can be tricky if you have updated all your drivers and have still failed you can save alot of time by starting fresh, backup all your data. get the latest drivers from intel for your chipset, and get the latest from ati. Reinsatll windows, get windows updates, install chipset drivers, make sure everything is working fine with the default windows video driver, then apply the ati drivers and see if you have a problem.
I should explain a little more, if you had nvidia on the system before there maybe a conflict in windows with those old drivers, hence the windows reinstall.

I dono exact what to search for. I did in the past at mobo homepage and nothing for w2k.
It is a Soyo BA+3 mobo.
You may be right, i'll be back with news later...
You really use the same Catalyst control center?

thur6165 i found at Intel some good drivers for my chipset BX440, but they didn't fix the video.
mjcoyne thanks, may be useful in the future.
nobus i did run dxdiag after a semifreeze :) and d3d was disabled, else "all" ok.
strickdd AGP FastWrite i think i have not, it's an old mobo. I was just searching other drivers and did not find.
Thanks all and the big surprise for me: the video card was brand new and broken, i tested it today at the service and in no time freezed in 3dmark.
Avoid Alastor video cards (made in China), didn't find one ok.
Now i have Nvidia like in the past and finished all the stress.

I'll search the net at their site.
The exact model is: Alastor ATI 9550, 256MB DDR/128BIT/TV/DVI, RETAIL
