Question

Dell Hard Drive Diagnostic Return Code: 7

Asked by: mLong_IT

Am getting error code: 7 while trying to reformat Maxtor 80 gb hard drive in a Dell Optiplex GX620.  Have tried reformatting several times.  Am aware that Dell site indicates bad sectors. Is there any way to fix the problem locally?

If you have a drive with bad sectors, it is better to replace the drive than to try to fix it, especially if it is only 80GB.  However, you should test the drive using the manufacturer's diagnostic utility on the UltimateBootCD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/.  You can also try Spinrite to mark the sectors as bad and hope for the best: http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm

the drive is bad and it needs to be replaced, the code 7 on dell's 90/90 hdd diagnostic means the drive has exceeded the maximum allowable bad sectors you will probably getting a smart error soon if you havent already got it.

You have a Dell OptiPlex GX620.  These computers are nearly brand new and all come with 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, 7200.8, or 7200.9

I have personally replaced 2 of the Barracuda 7200.7 80 GB drives in GX620 Ultra-Small Form Factor computers.  It is covered under warranty.

Visit http://support.dell.com and confirm the warranty.  Now call 1800 WWW Dell with your service tag and express service code ready.

Select Tech Support, You are calling from work or home... Punch in the express code.  Within 10 minutes, you will be speaking with somebody.

Just tell them to ship the drive and not a tech unless you really can't replace the hard drive.

It is really so simple.  Just open the case and find the drive.  Disconnect the power and sata connector.  Pull the drive, move the rails, put it back in like a Lego, and reconnect power and SATA.

Put the drive back in the box, slap the return label on and tape it shut.  Keep the return slip with tracking number for your records.  Now go to http://www.dhl.com/ and schedule a pickup.

That is all you have to do.  It should take about 10 minutes for you to get your part ordered.  Then just refuse a tech and do the work yourself.  You can replace the part, and re-package the old drive, and schedule a pickup in less than 10 minutes.   BEst of all, parts arrive overnight/next day.   This means if you order before 5PM, you will get your part the next day.

Now all you have to do is install the OS, Drivers, and Software, and you are set.  If you are luckey, you have an image already made and you can must image the computer and have it operational in about 5 mintues after you replace the drive.

If you have a different GX620, just select your form factor here http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx620/en/ug/index.htm

It will tell you where to find the hard drive and how to replace it.  Overally, you just pull it out and put the replacement in.

Well, someone screwed up.  Should definitly replace the harddrive instead of try to fix it.

A GX620 cannot be any older than maybe 6 to 8 months max.  For that reason, it is covered under Dell's Warranty and the best fix is a new drive.  I sure wouldn't trust a drive after fixing it with manufactuers utilities.  It should not need any bad sector fixing as it is a new drive and once a drive has bad sectors, more trouble will follow, soon.

Just replace the drive.
