HELP Newbie Identify These Components

Hello, I am quite new in the hardware area.  I just opened up my first computer -- it's an old broken Compaq 3550 model.  However, I am quite confused as I was greeted with an array of tiny silver squares with white lines everywhere, battery-like cylinders, and dust.  I was wondering if someone could identify some key items I've taken photographs of to help start my exploration of hardware.  The following is a list I compiled of some terms I found for hardware:

Microprocessor
--------------------------------------------------------------------
MEMORY
--------------------------------------------------------------------
RAM Memory --> these are those long, flat, green rectangular thingies with black rectangles on it, right?
ROM --> this is like the CD player, right?
PROM or EPROM
--------------------------------------------------------------------
GATES TTL LOGIC 54XX OR 74XX SERIES OR CMOS 4XXX
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Gates: OR, NOR, AND, XOR, XNOR
Open Collector
Multiplexer
Tristate buffer
Flip-Flip
Counter
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Components
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PAL, PLD, FPGA, CPLD, or any multifuction logic chip
Analog chip (e.g. opamp or comparator)
Timer
Clock crystal
Adder or subtractor
Counter
Shift Registor
Power supply
Voltage regulator
Jumpers or Dip Switch
Motors, LCD or LED
Resistor or Capacitor
Ribbon Cable
PC board
Sensor (e.g. hall effect, light, temp, position, switch)
Transistor
Diode
--------------------------------------------------------------------
CONNECTORS
--------------------------------------------------------------------
DB25M or DB25F (specify type)
DB15M or DB15F (specify type)
HD15M or HD15F (specify type)
DB9S or DB9F (specify type)
Centronics 36 pin
USB A or USB B (specify type)
PC2 (mouse or keyboard connector)
PC board connector (as found on motherboard or PC card)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPONENTS NOT LISTED
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Computer/Digital Component 1 not on my list
Computer/Digital Component 2 not on my list
etc.
