Question

Reformatted Hard Drive: Now having driver issues!

Asked by: ShiftCo

Herro!

After all sorts of problems, I thought I would format and partition my hard drive, and re-install Windows.
All has not gone to plan however and after solving a few problems, I seem to have over-worked my brain.
I am quite confused on what exactly is in my computer and what does what so Qu. 1):

Is there a link that someone can point to that gives me a quick tuition on what the role/difference between the Motherboard, Chipset, SPD, CPU etc etc (basically all the headings on Everest) so that I can converse intelligently on EE?

Right, secondly. I have included the Everest hardware report at the bottom but I have a few, probably related problems.

1) MESH computers (the manufacturer of the PC) directly me to 3 links:

http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock478/p4r800-vm/Chipset_Win2K_XP_7_991.zip

http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ad1888/AD1888_W.zip

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html

Which I followed, saved and unzipped in a location very close to the c: drive before running them.

The chipset program included when installing with a custom setting the 3com ethernet support and AGP GART Support from ATI
It installed fine until restarting at which point it hung on a black screen after the windows logo. Restarting it manually with the button on the front gave me a screen which gave me the option to start with the last known good settings.
When selecting just the ethernet option, all was good. Hence I am online.

The asus audio AD1888_W link started installing before coming up with the error: Severe! Driver not found. Reboot and run setup again.

After running Everest and looking on the Asus website, I thought the AD1980WHQL package was more appropriate but it came up with the same error. So I visited the Creative website and downloaded the package for My Audigy 2 Sound card . Hey presto, Sound!

Then there is the bottom link to the NVidia package, now as I am running Media Centre Edition, I beleive it is the wrong link anyway. So I found the correct one, and installed, Graphics seem to be working OK on my flat screen.
Dual View is not working though. In the NVidia control panel Single view only is available. Although if I select TV I can get the single view on the TV only...

According to Everest AGO Support is still not installed so I guess it wasnt installed with the NVidia package.

My Device Manager is showing 1 unknown device now: SM Bus Controller, from what I have researched quickly, I think it is linked to the chipset.

In conclusion... everest is showing 2 graphics-y type components, The GeForce 6800 Ultra which I assume is the dedicated graphics card and the ATI Radeon 9200 which I assume is onboard to the chipset(?)

What do I need to do to fix it all!!!!

Thanks for spending the time to read and think about it...

OK, excellent sites for the details, thanks.

However, I have already downloaded the drivers from the Asus website, and that is the chipset driver package which contains the 2 details - AGP Gart & Ethernet. The AGP Gart will not install without hanging on a black screen on reboot.

Should the Chipset be providing the AGP or my NVidia graphics card?

Cheers

Sorry, I meant, should the Radeon be providing the Gart support or the NVidia.
And should this solve the SM Bus Controller problem?

what i would do is install it with 1 video card (onboard), then load all drivers for the board - and THEN install the second video card.
as a matter of fact, i always suggest to install the bare mobo with minimum drives, without add on cards, to avoid misleading indications.
if you take the GEforce out, things will be clearer in device manager and Everest

OK, all went as planned.

Uninstalled NVidia and booted using onboard. Installed the Gart support that crashed last time. Rebooted in BIOS to NVidia, update driver package.
Everest Chipset page shows more normal AGP section.

However, I still have the SM Bus Controller 'unknown device' in device manager.
From a bit of a search this may be connected to the chipset, though I have installed the most recent chipset from the ASUS website.
?

Also in NVidia control panel I am unable to view multiple monitors at the same time any more:
In 'Change Display Configuration' > 'Choose the nView display mode to use'
Only use one display (single) is the only option.

Before format, I used to have the clone / Dual-View options.

The second option, however 'Select the display you would like to use'
Allows me to select either my TV or my Monitor, both of which work fine on their own.

My monitor connects through a VGA Cable - DVI adapter
My TV connects through S-Video
?

Cheers!

The SMBus controller is the 'System Management Bus controller', it's part of the  chipset on your motherboard.

Problems with the SMBus controller typically indicate that you didn't install the  INF update utility, also known as the Chipset Software Installation utility.
this can indicate 2 things :
1- you did not install the correct chipset driver,
2- your motherboard has a bad chipset, in which case you need to replace the mobo
you did install this one, yes ?

Uh oh.

Yes i'm pretty sure thats the one. The desktop is at home so I will have to check later.
As far as I can remember though, it only showed 2 components when installing using 'Custom':
   1) AGP Gart Support
   2) 3Com ethernet support
And thats all. Could this be the reason? Am I missing a complete chipset driver package?

I dont really like the idea of a new motherboard, meh...

>>  3Com ethernet support  << relates to a network card; should be this one :
ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock478/p4r800-vm/3C920.zip
>>  AGP Gart Support  << should be loaded by the chipset driver, so i suppose those 2 problems would be cured together.

>>  I dont really like the idea of a new motherboard, meh  <<  who does? check if it carries warranty to have it replaced, other wise you'll need to empty your pockets . .

OK, my point was that the chipset driver package only seemed to contain the network card driver and the Gart support. They both installed fine after your recommendations.
Am I missing something?
Can a BIOS update help anything?
Cheers mate,

Wicked, sorted the problem.

I was playing in device manager, clicking on the yellow SM Bus Controller > Reinstall driver
and clicking on any directories within the unzipped chipset folder until I hit a random one and bingo! It installed fine. Wierd though.

Anyways, thanks for your help.

Regards,

Joe
