Question

Overclock Asrock 775Dual-880Pro motherboard

Asked by: mtech

Hi
I have an Asrock 775Dual-880Pro motherboard and Intel 3ghz P4 CPU that I want to overclock a little just to see what difference it makes. The motherboard supports Hybrid Booster, ASRock U-COP and Boot Failure Guard that are meant to make it safer to overclock but having never done this before I don't know how to go about some simple overclocking. I did take a look in the BIOS CPU settings but don't want to make any changes incase it is the wrong thing. I have found many references on the web saying it can be done and that the board is ideal for 'mild' overclocking but nothing saying how.

Any suggestions

Is it a P4 530 cpu?  If so, it has a 800 FSB that quad-pumps the motherboard's 200FSB.  The easiest way to overclock this is to lock your PCI bus speed to 33, your AGP bus to 66, and your PCI-e to 100.  Then increase the motherboard Front Side Bus from 200, moving it up in small increments (+5MHz) and testing with a benchmark program each time to see if it is stable.  PCMark05 is a good program to run for this purpose.

CPU Properties:
CPU Type                  Intel Pentium 4 630, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
CPU Alias                  Prescott-2M
CPU Stepping            N0
Instruction Set            x86, x86-64, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3
Original Clock            3000 MHz
Min / Max CPU Multiplier      14x / 15x
Engineering Sample            No
L1 Trace Cache            12K Instructions
L1 Data Cache            16 KB
L2 Cache                  2 MB  (On-Die, ECC, ATC, Full-Speed)

Is this better or worse than a P4 530?

The 6xx series had 2MB of cache, as opposed to the 5xx series which had 1MB.  It's definitely better.

Ok - I have pushed the FSB to 210 giving a CPU speed of approx 3.2ghz and all seems stable - what would you expect it to be able to go up to, or does that seem reasonable?

by: CallandorPosted on 2006-09-29 at 13:58:09ID: 17630785

10% is reasonable (220 FSB), 20% is great, and anything more is exceptional.  The most I've ever pushed any cpu on air cooling was 50%, but those were known to be very overclockable cpus and were the exception.

by: mtechPosted on 2006-09-30 at 12:34:22ID: 17635903

FSB now at 215 with a CPU temp of 39c after running for several hours without a hitch - think I will push it up to 220 and leave it at that

by: mtechPosted on 2006-09-30 at 12:58:02ID: 17635949

Now at 220 with CPU tem maxing (under load) at 50c - 40c at idle

I will leave it at this for a while and see how it goes

Many thanks
