Question

Who manufactures HP's HP branded motherboards?

Asked by: jstilgen

I am curious about HP motherboards. They recently started using HP brand motherboards. Can anyone tell me if they are actually "producing" these motherboards themselves or are the branding another manufacturers motherboard with the HP logo and if so who is actually producing the motherboards they are branding HP? Just curious... Also what is your track record with HP workstations/servers?

I have BELARC profile of computer and it says HP is the system board, what i am wondering is does HP actually produce these motherboards or are they branding HP on another manufacturers motherboard. We need more system info to track down the manufacturer. No doubt that its made by another company as HP is the end user of many products built to order for them. The bios string as coral47 mentioned is probably the best way to decipher this. Post the Bios string, you may need to adjust some settings in the bios to allow the post messages to be viewed during startup. Use the pause key to stop the post in order to copy the bios string.

To answer your base question: HP uses motherboards from several manufacturers.
09E0h is an HP number and doesn't help much.
The rest may with a little digging.
Gone to get my shovel....

There are two possible motherboards in your system.
HP replacement part numbers: 403714-001 or 376570-001.
These part numbers should be more searchable that the other numbers here.

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2006-10-07 at 15:36:55ID: 17683859

There are some notes at HP:

For the 403714-001 it says: >>This part meets requirements of European Union’s RoHS Directive*<<

For the 376570-001 it says: >>This part has not been modified to meet the requirements of the European Union’s RoHS Directive*<<

RoHS = "European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive".
Basically means it's lead free and doesn't have various other nasty things in it.

I haven't found much else on the board(s).

Speculation is that it's an actual Intel board.
(Intel boards are physically manufactured for Intel by FoxConn but that's a big secret. Shhh!)
FoxConn does not re-brand the models built for intel or offer any support. That's Intel's job.
.

At this point the BIOS string  in the post message would be a good piece of information to check.

I do not have access to the HP macnine in question... My reason to ask this question is a vendor who I do business with very condescendingly told me HP machines are better than custom built "white boxes" because they use their own mobos... I told him I was unaware HP was manufacturing mobos and figured they got their mobos from another vendor... He bascially gave me a roll of the eyes response and went on to insist I would be sorry if i used an evil "white box" ... blah, blah blah... Since I am self admintedly not the queen of all things computers I wanted to make sure my theory about HP using branded mobos was correct. So I came to my favorite group of people to ask... YOU FOLKS!!! As always I get more help in this site than anywwhere... and it is gender neutral... being a gal in a man's world (computer world that is) can be very frustrating... SO thanks to all of you for your digging into this and assisting me with this question, which is more a matter of pride than anything. As always thanks for sharing your brain cells with me! :) J

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2006-10-07 at 19:42:45ID: 17684855

You were correct.
HP does not manufacture their own boards.
They -are- custom made for HP by OEM manufacturers but often all that means is something is missing that the retail version still has and that the BIOS has been customized to flash an HP logo when it starts.
I have an Asus "HP" motherboard out in the shop right now.

by: coral47Posted on 2006-10-07 at 20:34:53ID: 17684949

Thank you much.    : )

>> They -are- custom made for HP by OEM manufacturers but often all that means...

What he said.  : )

>> ... very condescendingly told me HP machines are better than custom built... I would be sorry if i used an evil "white box" ...

"Better" is a relative term. HP has a decent hardware reputation lately, but mostly the guy is running a "spiel" on you. For whatever his reasons are.
I have found with a little planning and shopping around, I can 'usually' put together a better "evil whitebox" for the same price range. But I LIKE fighting with hardware.  ; )

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2006-10-08 at 05:45:45ID: 17685887

Thank you, the re-occurring theme of "evil white box" >:-{>     rears its ugly head again. Its amazing that people still think in terms of those big US based corporations building their own components. Heaven forbid anyone would find out  they they outsource anything. I doubt if any part in the computer has actually been produced in North America for that matter.
PCBONEZ where did you come up with the INTEL-Foxconn connection?

by: jstilgenPosted on 2006-10-08 at 16:35:05ID: 17687925

I have several "white box" servers all custom built to my specifications, all still running like purring kittens... I try to research mobos, chipsets, memory, hard drives, NICs, video cards and have them built accordingly. Still can build a better whitebox server for the money than any of the big name brands... So I will hold my ground with this fella and keep letting my little no name shop (who by the way works with me in a team oriented way rather than a pressure sell or else way) and continue to get my evil servers built to my specs... Again thanks for the info and all of your brain power! You do not know how much this site helps those of us that are 1 person IT departments who just have to make due on small budgets and little time...  Many, many thanks! J

It was a side note in some Corporate Info type pages I was reading.
If I can find it again I'll show you but I'm riding 56k for a while so that kind of thing is a pain to find.

No problem PCBONEZ, I believe you when you say it. I knew someone built them but didn't know who. 56K, what a pain in the ASCII.
