When I load the driver for the AC97 sound, my system crashes into a reboot during installation. I have reloaded WindowsXP Pro several times and downloaded the latest drivers from Realtek but during installation (just prior to completion) the system reboots.

I used to run an ASUS P4S800D mobo. After I would install XP on there I would run SP2 updates. The sound driver was downloaded directly from the service pack updates - not the cd. Assuming you have updated XP to the latest Service pack from Microsoft.com did you try rebooting the system to see if you have sound after updating (do not use the cd yet). After you've verified that service packs are updated to fullest extent let me know if it gave you a sound driver.

Regarding that statement, had you adjusted any hardware internally?
Since your mobo has onboard sound, have you had the chance to try another sound card in the system from another machine to see if you can get sound that way?
Last suggestion for right now, if all the above fails, go to Device Manager (right click my computer / properties) and see if the sound driver is functioning properly before installing the sound driver from the cd. Try using the Wizard to install it as well while you're there.
Let me know how it all goes! :)
as said, first install the chipset drivers, then the rest.

if it still does not work, you may have a bad sound section on the mobo; you can disable it in the bios and try another sound card

Where are you getting the ac97 sound driver from? The cd that came with your ASUS or from the windows xp update?
