Hi, There was a power surge recently, and computer wouldn;t start.
I have a power supply which i put in, but when i turn it on, the power light flashes orange. The light on te motorboard lights up ok.

Usually a blinking amber power led indicates a bad psu but i have seen bad motherboards cause it also. Possible the psu isnt compatible or isnt big enough, post what model of dell desktop it is and what size psu you are trying.

It is a Dell Dimension 3000, the PSU i tried is a 350W, but just gives the flashing Orange light.
I have just tried a PSU from an older computer I have, but it has no P4 connector is it that goes to the motherboard. (it has 4 pins) But when i tried it it turned on ok and the fan went on and everything but just nothing loaded on the screen.

I assume that is the PSU fault then from the first one I am trying.
Where could i get a replacement? I am uk based.

The dim 3000 uses a standard atx psu w/ 4 pin power connector, if the known good 350watt is prodicing the blibking amber led it looks like the motherboard was also damaged by the surge. Was the system connected to a surge protector or ups?

No there was no surge protector or ups.  Not worth getting another PSU then? The 350W i tried was new just out of box.  The light on the mother board works fine.

Before any of this I tried a new power cable only, in case the fuse was gone in the plug just.  I had no monitor etc plugged in at this stage and it seemed to power on ok, so i was holding the power button in to knock power off, to plug int he monitor, keyboard etc, but the psu blew up.
