Browse All TopicsHello there,
I have an ASUS P5AD2-E Premium motherboard with an onborad Sil 3114 running SATALink Bios version 5.0.39.
Two questions if I may.
Fisrtly how do I get it to just treat the drives as normal SATA (i.e. non-RAID). I have specified this in my BIOS (i.e. not to run in RAID mode), the Sil Array Manager that launched when Windows XP starts showing the Sil controller recognises the drives present correctly but I cannot see them under disk management. The only options I can see in the Sil Array Manager are to create an array, which I don't want to do, I just want to access the disks normally. It seems the controller sees the disks but not Windows. They all have data on them, so I don't want to do anything that might destroy the data on them.
Secondly, is there a limit on the size of the drives it can deal with. When I plug in two my 750GB Seagtae Barracudas, it just hangs in between the IDE scan and starting WIndows.
I just get a black screen like this:
Sil 3114 SATALink BIOS version 5.0.39
Copyright (c) 1997-2003 Silicon Image, Inc
0 ST3750640AS _
And the underscore just sits there blinking.
Any help gratefully received.

I had the same exact problem with a DFI NFII LanParty Ultra B board using the same Sil 3114 SATA controller as your ASUS and with the same 5.0.39 BIOS version for the controller. That version of the Silicon Image BIOS cannot support hard drives that large. I'm not sure what the size limit is for that version of the Sil BIOS but I had a 500GB drive attached with no problems but it would not recognize a 750GB so the limit is somewhere in between. Since DFI no longer publishes updated BIOS for that motherboard I had to obtain a third party BIOS for my board that included SATALink BIOS version 5.0.64. After loading the new BIOS I have been able to use drives up to 1TB in size (I haven't tried a larger one than that.) Therefore, my suggestion would be to check with ASUS to see if they have an updated BIOS for your motherboard that would include a newer version of the SATALink BIOS or look for a third party BIOS for your ASUS board. I located the third party BIOS for my DFI board from users posting in the DFI forums.
ASUS has resolved this issue with the latest firmware 1011-012. Details here: http://support.asus.com/fa
I am now running 4 x 1TB drives on the SI3114 controller.

Sil 3114 is supposed to have the following options - JBOD, 0, 1 and 10. JBOD (Just A Bunch Of Disks) is the non raid option.
