The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Norton Ghost Caused a System Crash and Now I Cant Reload Windows XP Pro

Asked by hinnantp in General Computer Systems

I was attempting to use a desktop to load Ghost images on laptop hard drives using a USB to Laptop hard drive cable.  I opened Norton Ghost and pointed to the appropriate hard drive to Ghost and the CD ROM with the ghost image disk.  The program acted as usual and restarted the computer into DOS 7.1 the ghosting program froze before starting the process.  Any attempt to either restart the computer or cold start the computer only brought you back to the DOS Ghost program.  I tried to use F8 to direct the computer to the appropriate boot drive with no success. I checked the Bios for changes but found nothing out of order.  When I tried to look at the contents of the boot drive while in DOS, I was only able to see the Norton Ghost files.
I assumed the boot drive was corrupt so I installed the XP pro disk to try to repair the OS.
The XP disk froze at the blue "Set-Up" screen and went no further.  I removed the boot disk from the computer and using another computer was able to see all the files on the disk and copy those that were necessary to an external drive.  I then used the second computer to re-fromat the drive.  I re-installed the drive in it's original computer and again attempted to load XP pro with the same results as before.
The hard drive is a Seagate SATA drive so I thought that it may have something to do with SATA drivers on the disk.  I used the Disk Wizard from Seagate to "0" the disk and then set-up the drive for Windows XP install.  I again tried to install Windows and again it freezes on Windows SET-UP.  I have disconnected all other drives in the computer but it seems to not find the hard drive for installation.  The Bios is set to recognize SATA and is the most current Bios available from Asus.  I am confused as to why I am unable to simply reload Windows XP Pro and start everything from scratch?  It is apparent that the Norton program changed or corrupted something.  After zeroing out the hard drive I can't imagine something still being there and I was able to see and copy contents from it on another computer.
  HELP!!
The computer specs are as as follows:
Asus P5P800 Motherboard with 1 Gig RAM (512x2)
Seagate 160 Gig SATA Hard Drive
Onboard Sound and LAN
Floppy Drive, CD/DVD ROM and CD/DVD Burner
