Question

Dell Dimension E520 Power Supply Question

Asked by: andrepires

Hi experts!
I have a Dell Dimension E520 with a burnt power supply. The power supply model is H305N-00.
The technical specification of the power supply is:

+5V = 22A
+3.3V = 17A
+12VA = 18A
+12VB = 18A
-12V = 1A
+5Vfp = 2A

Connectors:
24Pin Motherboard and CPU Connector
4 x 5Pin SATA Power Connectors
1 x 4Pin IDE Power Connector
1 Floppy drive power connector

Max Output Power: 305W

As I said, this power supply is burnt and it is very difficult to find an original replacement here in Brazil, so I'm trying to find a generic power supply with same specifications.
I found one with the following specifications:

+5V = 50A
+3.3V = 32A
+12VA = 19A
+12VB = 19A
-12V = 1A
+5Vsb = 2A

Connectors:
24Pin Motherboard and CPU Connector
1 x 5Pin SATA Power Connector
5 x 4Pin IDE Power Connectora
1 Floppy drive power connector

Max Output Power: 550W

My questions are:

1) The generic power supply has only one 5Pin SATA Power Connector. The vendor said that I can use
IDE to SATA power adaptors, but this is what I'm worried about... The SATA Adaptors have only 4 wires
(Orange-Black-Red-Black), while the SATA power connectors in my original power supply have 5 wires
(Orange-Black-Red-Black-White)... What is the white wire for? Can I really use the adaptors and the
new power supply?
2) It seams like the generic power supply is technically superior if compared to the original one.
Does it represent a problem for my computer or it is ok?

Thank you very much!

Since it's a recent model Dell, you don't have to worry about proprietary connections, which they had in earlier models.  The IDE-SATA adaptor should work fine - you have two black (ground) wires in the 5-pin supply.   The white is probably +3.3v and not rreally needed - see http://www.adpmods.com/case-modding/A-Modders-Guide-To-Making-Custom-SATA-Power-Cables-sp-26.html

The replacement power supply looks superior to the original probably because Dell didn't spend a lot of money on it.  There's not much power demand in that machine.

It works for me - this is what it says:

As you can see the Molex power connector is the exact same female type that comes from your power supply. The other two pictures are of the SATA power connectors. Note that the key is next to pin 1. So therefore the wire map of the SATA connector is:

Pin 1 Yellow 12v

Pin 2 Black ground

Pin 3 Red 5v

Pin 4 Black ground

Pin 5 <not used> 3.3v but we’re not concerned with this
