The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Dell Dimension E520 Power Supply Question

Asked by andrepires in General Computer Systems

Hi experts!
I have a Dell Dimension E520 with a burnt power supply. The power supply model is H305N-00.
The technical specification of the power supply is:

+5V = 22A
+3.3V = 17A
+12VA = 18A
+12VB = 18A
-12V = 1A
+5Vfp = 2A

Connectors:
24Pin Motherboard and CPU Connector
4 x 5Pin SATA Power Connectors
1 x 4Pin IDE Power Connector
1 Floppy drive power connector

Max Output Power: 305W

As I said, this power supply is burnt and it is very difficult to find an original replacement here in Brazil, so I'm trying to find a generic power supply with same specifications.
I found one with the following specifications:

+5V = 50A
+3.3V = 32A
+12VA = 19A
+12VB = 19A
-12V = 1A
+5Vsb = 2A

Connectors:
24Pin Motherboard and CPU Connector
1 x 5Pin SATA Power Connector
5 x 4Pin IDE Power Connectora
1 Floppy drive power connector

Max Output Power: 550W

My questions are:

1) The generic power supply has only one 5Pin SATA Power Connector. The vendor said that I can use
IDE to SATA power adaptors, but this is what I'm worried about... The SATA Adaptors have only 4 wires
(Orange-Black-Red-Black), while the SATA power connectors in my original power supply have 5 wires
(Orange-Black-Red-Black-White)... What is the white wire for? Can I really use the adaptors and the
new power supply?
2) It seams like the generic power supply is technically superior if compared to the original one.
Does it represent a problem for my computer or it is ok?

Thank you very much!
