Question

1720 Smart Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure

Asked by: Sariff

Experts - I am getting the below error when my HDD boots:
"1720 Smart Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure"
The only options are "F1" or "F10".

I changed out the HDD with the original HDD (perfect condition) I still get the same error.

Any thoughts?

Hey,

This could possibly due to bad hard drive cables or a bad hard drive controller.

Here are some things to try:
1. First off try new cables, these could be damaged. Does the error still show?

2. Go into the BIOS and set everything to BIOS default settings. This will restore the hard drive settings to the safest configuration. Does the error still show?

3. If this doesn't work, try and updating the BIOS to the latest version. Again, does the error still show?

4. After all of this try the hard drives in another computer that works perfectly fine. Does the hard drives show the same error on the working PC? If not then it will more than likely be the controller of the motherboard.

Unless you actually have two damaged hard drives, which will just be a complete pain for you. Then you will more than likely need to replace both drives.

i would start by running a disk test first.
this will show the condition of the disk, controllers and cables.
try any of these :   http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Ah yes, something i overlooked. Thanks nobus.
So when you get to the stage of testing the hard drives in another computer that you are sure that works, use the tools that nobus pointed out as well again.

This is just to make sure that the hard drives have been tested in a working environment as well, if they failed testing in the original system of course.
