Question

Ethernet Adapter Not Installed

Asked by: bbclarke97

I had a new hard drive put into a Dell GX270 Optiplex running Windows Xp Pro.  When it went into the repair shop for this installation, the internet access was working just fine.  Now that it is back, I cannot connect to the internet.  The message I get is that the ethernet adapter is not installed.  Having exhausted all possibilities of being helped by Dell do to a lack of a service tag on the machine ( I bought it refurbished), I have no idea what  to do to solve my problem. Is it a physical part I need to buy or drivers I need to download?

Does a ethernet device show up in the device manager? If so it is just a matter of installing the driver.

by: maxis2cutePosted on 2008-02-14 at 07:42:58ID: 20894201

you need to install the driver for the card.  there should be a driver on the original disk.

once you install the lan driver you will be golden.  if you can get to another computer with internet access yoiu can download it form there

Sorry the last post was supposed to be prefaced with if you do not have the CD

"You will need to use a friends computer or a library computer to download the drivers"

these are the instrcutions from dells website on how to install the downloaded driver

Download
1.Click Download Now, to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save this program to
disk (Windows XP users, click Save) and click OK. The Save In: window
appears.
3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to
select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
name icon appears on your desktop.

Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R66787.EXE.
The Self-Extractor window appears.
2.Click OK or Continue.
The Self-Extracting Driver Installation window appears and prompts to
extract files to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R66787.
3.Leave all of the default settings and click Unzip or OK. If the
directory doesn't exist, you'll be prompted to create one. Click Yes. A
Self Extractor window appears and indicates C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R66787 files were
extracted.
4.Click OK.
Follow the on-screen installation instructions in the window.

If for some reason there is no onscreen instructions you would do the following after extracting the driver

right click my computer select properties then go to the hardware tab click on device manager in device manager there will be a device with a ? mark it will probably say ethernet device or unknown device click on this then go to the drivers tab and select update driver on the first screen select "no not this time" then click next , select install from a list or specific location then click next, uncheck search removable media, check include this location in the search select browse and browse to where you unzipped the drivers then click on that folder then click next then next again then finish

If you do not have access to the disk or another PC I would callback the repair shop there is no excuse for them not properly repairing the machine including verifying all the drivers are installed for all of your devices. Everyone makes mistakes but you may want to consider a different repair shop next time considering that if the NIC card drivers aren't installed then they never ran windows update or any other updates on the system including anti virus and so forth.

Still have a problem connecting to the internet. But think it may be the modem. I have open questions about this now.

by: bbclarke97Posted on 2008-04-04 at 14:46:38ID: 21285865

There was an error message #692 that came up after installing the drivers and trying to connect to the internet."There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device) Modem is failing to respond. Verify that the interrupt for the port is properly set."  Do you think I need a new modem?
