The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

The file named may be part of Spysweeper.

I'd open your machine up and check the IDE cables to your CD and DVD drives.  It may have come loose at the motherboard end.  If not remove and reseat it.

This may be a dumb question but have you tried the F2 option and then checked if you can reset the IDE detection to automatic in the BIOS?

The current genuine memtest86 is here - http://www.memtest86.com/
Nobus, is there some additional virtue in the version you reference? They don't appear all that reliable -

great, all that was wrong was that the IDE cable was loose from the motherboard.  the ssiEFr.exe error is gone as well! Thank you.  Can any of you summerize the README.txt file from http://www.memtest86.com/?

Command  Description:
ESC   Exits the test and does a warm restart via the BIOS.
  c     Enters test configuration menu
            Menu options are:
               1) Test selection
               2) Address Range
               3) Memory Sizing
               4) Error Report Mode
               5) Show DMI Memory Info
               6) ECC Mode
               7) Restart w/Defaults
               8) Redraw Screen
               9) Adv. Options

SP    Set scroll lock (Stops scrolling of error messages)
Note: Testing is stalled when the scroll lock is
set and the scroll region is full.
CR    Clear scroll lock (Enables error message scrolling)

If you want memtest get it on the UBCD from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

There's a wide range of other utils on the CD as well and well worth the time to download.

Make the CD and boot from that.  Find memtest and get it running.  Leave it for about 4 hours.  If there's errors they'll be on the screen.  If there's no errors there'll be nothing.

This link talks about errors http://www.memtest86.com/? and that's probably all you need to know.

when you boot from memtest, it will start running - blue screen.
it should report 0 errors; if 1 is found, that stick needs replacement; to find it, test stick by stick

what file do you burn to the boot disk?
and after you put that file on the disk, do you just leave it in the drive when you reboot?

05.07.2008 at 12:40PM PDT, ID: 21519682
If you are using the floppy disk method then place a blank floppy disk in your floppy drive and click on install.bat

That will do the installation for you.

Once installed make sure the floppy drive is first to boot in the BIOS setup and leave the disk in the drive when your reboot.
