Question

Dell Dimension C521 clean re-install of generic XP Pro

Asked by: alpha101

I brought a second hand dell dimension C521 and do not have a recovery disk.  I've attempted to install a generic copy of windows XP pro on to the computer.  After the initial install phase of windows the computer reboots and doesn't seem to find the hard drive as it goes back and does the initial install phase again!

I believe that the dell requires a SATA driver to be installed at the initial install phase by pressing F6.  The closest floppy SATA driver I can find is at:

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=hu&l=hu&s=gen&releaseid=R164974&SystemID=DIM_P4_E521&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=9711&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=4&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=41&fileid=221847

but when i hit F6 on installation it says it 'Cannot find setuptxt.oem'.

You can actually alter the Windows XP CD to have the needed SATA drivers preloaded.

I'm not sure the drivers that I have mentioned in my question are the correct drivers.  And I'm not 100% sure iit is the drivers.    I don't want to go through the pain of creating a disk like this if I can avoid it.  But I will try if I receive no better answer.

You can download the drivers directly from Intel. What I basically did was download them ALL, and simply integrate them into the install disk so I could use it on multiple machines as I am a desktop technician.

I don't think the motherboard is intel, please see here for the spec:

It's an AMD athlon.  Would you be able to give me a link to the mostly likely drivers I would need to get?

I would get them direct from AMD if that's the case.

Sounds to me like you have the wrong driver. I've seen this loads of times.

Most of the Dell driver CDs are bootable and will let you generate the correct driver diskette by simply selecting an option in the menu that presents itself.

You might try to disable AHCI in bios and if it helps, you wont need F6 during installation at all.

Correct answer goes to MiniDevo. As all the SATA drivers needed were on DELL recovery disks which I don't have.  So I used the instructions to create a windows XP disk with the correct drivers on it in the first place.  The problem with DELL is none of the software on their site created a F6'able floppy disk so I couldn't do that.  Many Thanks issue resolved.
