Question

PC keeps freezing for about 10 seconds

Asked by: pndoyleuk

Hi Guys

I hope you can help me here.

We have 40 PCs running on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Domain.
Symantec Endpoint Protection 11   /  client install package: 11.0.300
IE7
Citrix Program Neighborhood 10.200
Office 2007

It happens that only one PC (entire OS) will freeze up for about 10 seconds and then will release again and continue working as usual.

After the basic troubleshooting I have replaced the users PC with a new PC with our template image which everyone is using and it still keeps happening.

I have also noticed that Network Utilization spikes to up to 4% but other users have this at about 0.1% constantly.

Could it be the user profile? As it just happens to this one specific user.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

it coukd be the profile and it could be a scheduled thing that runs for that special machine or that special user

by: pndoyleukPosted on 2009-01-26 at 05:00:52ID: 23466120

The only thing which is scheduled is a reboot over night.

In Event Viewer (system) I've got
ID 7035 The COH_Mon service was successfully sent a start control

This happens every hour but the freezing up doesn't happen to the same time.

What could the profile do? (roaming profile)

>>  noticed that Network Utilization spikes to up to 4% but other users have this at about 0.1% constantly  <<  can you connect him to another lan port?

by: pndoyleukPosted on 2009-01-26 at 05:36:33ID: 23466353

Changed the port on the floor and on the switch and additionally the cables.
Didn't help. Still freezing up.

by: nobusPosted on 2009-01-26 at 07:47:20ID: 23467596

then make another user account, and test with it

by: augwestPosted on 2009-01-26 at 08:17:02ID: 23467965

Do you use roaming profiles?
If so it maybe something in the user profile

you can test this by simply logging in as any other user on his machine

by: pndoyleukPosted on 2009-01-27 at 00:41:42ID: 23474495

Tried that. Other users on the same machine don't have the problem.
When I move the "troubled" user to a different machine, the new machine keeps freezing.

Is it possible that the connection to the Exchange Server is blocking that up?
There are loads of files in his Outlook....

by: nobusPosted on 2009-01-27 at 04:36:56ID: 23475648

did you try another account?

by: augwestPosted on 2009-01-27 at 10:56:23ID: 23479753

The way it sounds it doesnt have to do with exchange

If other accounts work fine and if the issue is following the user to other machines it sounds like a corrupted roaming profile

You may have to create a new one for the user

by: KnightsmanPosted on 2009-01-28 at 06:10:28ID: 23486535

hae you tested your hardware?  Maybe a ram stick going bad?

by: pndoyleukPosted on 2009-01-28 at 07:51:43ID: 23487694

Hardware is just fine! We have replaced the machine with an image everybody in the company is using.

What on the roaming profile could go wrong.

Just to update the issue:
As this issue is only for about 10 sec I haven't seen the problem. Only the user is constantly reporting the freeze. He reported that the mouse can still be moved but the applications won't react on clicks.
Does that somehow ring the bell?

Thanks for your help guys. Much appreciated!

by: augwestPosted on 2009-01-28 at 12:13:40ID: 23490729

He could have a corrupted file or something in his users settings could have gotten messed up

Can you rename his profile and then create a new one for the user? That way you can rule out if its his domain account or something in his user data

by: HighlanderXPosted on 2009-02-02 at 15:24:46ID: 23532660

Can the user try using the machine without using Outlook for a while?
What version of Outlook are you using and how large is his PST files? - If it's a corrupt PST this will lock his machine everytime he or Outlooks looks at that file.  Older versions of Outlook can only support PST's of about 500MB each but the newer versions can support 2GB of PST.

If it was an Exchange issue I would have expected wider issues with his email.

this seems a hardware problem - maybe bios?  are the bios settings the same for all PC's ?

OK!

Update of Bloomberg fixed the problem.
