The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. I need serious help with blue screen problems

Let me explain all from the beginning. So I bought an XPS 420 from ebay, which is different from the original specification as the system now has an overclocked quad  core 3.4GHZ, changed the memory to ballistics DDR2  1x4GHZ,  Zotac Ge-Force 8800,  upgraded the power supply to a bigger capacity, and installed a new creative sound card by my self.

First time using it for a month, everything works well and then after that blue screen started to happen. I contacted Dell as a first effort and he recommend me to do a re-installation of the system, sadly I did that. Everything went well again for like 2-3 weeks, and then blue screen started to happen. But it doesn't happen so often, I tried to turn off my pc once a day to prevent this and I was just saying to my self that I would just bear with this problem.

Apparently just starting from 3 days ago, the problem becomes more severe..it happens more often now. So I called Dell representative again and they told me to remove the sound card and let the system on for a day to see what happens, apparently it is still happening. Next day I called they asked me to remove the graphic card and I was having trouble with it so I wasn't able to remove it and they just told me to remove the ge-force 8800 from the system and use standard VGA graphic cards. I did that and just 5 minutes after doing that the blue screen shows up again. He then uses a windows debugger tool and showed me some files which is corrupted and told me now to reformat the disk first and then re-install the system. The previous time I tried to re-install the windows was from the hard disk and I did not format it first.

This just confuses me if formatting the drive first and then installing the OS will fix the problem. I am afraid that the problem might lie in the memory, however I checked the memory and it's fine. Please suggest me if there's anything that I can do first before formatting the disk and do a fresh installation of the OS. I really hate spending time having to install my applications one by one and having to backup everything first.
