Question

Do not understand Dell OpenManage

Asked by: shinmaikeru

I have Dell servers, and I have a newly-installed PE1800 that is flashing orange. I have no idea what is wrong with it, but it started flashing after some problems setting up apcupsd (auto shutdown when power goes our and using APC UPS). I found another question on EE that says using OpenManage will tell you what's wrong, but I am using RHEL5.3, and the OpenManage installation method doesn't support RHEL5.3 installations, so I did not install a utility partition, and I cannot install OpenManage in Linux.

I have used some of the OpenManage disks to update hardware and so on, but I find the choices under "Dell Support website -> Drivers and Downloads -> Systems Management" to be confusing.

There are something like 17 different ISO's with not-very-helpful names, and there is no explanation that I can find.

I have booted the OpenManage Server Build and Update Utility disk to update hardware using the repository extracted from the Server Updates download by putting it on a USB drive, but how can I use OpenManage utilities to correct this flashing orange light without installing OpenManage on the hardware?

I would like to know which download to use and how, without installing on the hard disk.

What is the error code being shown on the front LED that is flashing amber? This will tell me generally what is wrong

by: shinmaikeruPosted on 2009-08-12 at 04:34:24ID: 25077581

This is a PE1800. There is no LED display. There is only an amber flashing where it should be a blue light.

If I had an error message, I could look into it, but RHEL5 knows nothing about this. Nothing /var/log turns up anything. On a non-Dell machine, I had this problem in the past, but I had to just boot into the setupBIOS and clear the error log. But that was a homemade PC with Asus MB. The Dell BIOS has no such log, so I can't find the problem.

I'm sorry. I must have not made myself clear. I am not using VMWare, and I don't really want to install OpenManage. I don't have an OpenManage server or anything, and I only have a 5 servers.

I just want something that will let me diagnose the reason for this flashing amber light, and another EE post listed OpenManage as the way to find the problem.

I am getting frustrated with Dell over this, because I have had several servers that start flashing amber, but I have no way to diagnose it.

Try running the DSET tool - check the attached document on how to install and use

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/en/dell_system_tool?c=us&l=en&s=gen

Custom Instructions for delldset_v1.8.0.130.bin:

Download:
1. Click the "Download Now" link to download the file.
2. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click the "I agree" link to accept the agreement.
3. When the File Download window appears, click "Save" to save the file to your hard drive.

Installation:
Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and open a console or command prompt. Run the DSET binary from the console or command prompt:
./delldset_v1.8.0.130.bin

Once the Dell license is accepted, follow the binary wizard instructions
to do any of the following:

1. Read DSET Release Notes First - Displays the README contents
2. Create a DSET Report Only - Loads DSET to create a standard system configuration report which is typically written to the current user's home directory
3. Clear ESM Hardware Log - Clears the log of any past hardware events. This also typically resets the PowerEdge amber warning light to blue
4. Install/Upgrade DSET Application - Permanently installs DSET for
repeat use
Note: Add the optional parameter "--install" to silently install the DSET
application for repeat use. The default installation path is /opt/dell/dset.

Now that sounds promising. I will try it day-after-tomorrow (here in Japan, tomorrow is grave-cleaning day, kind of like All Soul's Day). Thank you so much.

Do you know of an intelligible overview of OpenManage tools and Dell utilities, so that I can understand what each of those downloads do?

Thank you again.

Open Manage
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/sitelets/solutions/management/openmanage?c=us&l=en&cs=555

DSET
Dell System E-Support Tool (DSET) provides the ability to collect hardware, storage and operating system information from a Dell PowerEdgeTM  server.

This information is consolidated into a single System Configuration Report that can be used for troubleshooting or inventory collection of a system. The browser user interface provides a convenient means to view specific data through hierarchal menu trees.

Please note- As part of the troubleshooting process you may be asked to provide a DSET log when you contact Dell Technical Support.

That was just what I needed - something that I could run without Linux that would let me peer under the hood.
