Browse All TopicsI have a little server which acts as a file and print server for a small company of 4 full time employees. This server (desktop really) is a Dell Optiplex gx520. Someone recently have me a Optiplex 745 which has a better core 2 duo processor. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if I can swap processors in these machines. I understand you would need to know about the motherboards or what not, but I really do not know how to research this information. So if anyone can answer this I would be grateful.
So I want to swap processors between an Optiplex gx520 (Pentium 4) and Optiplex 745 (Core 2 Duo)
Thanks

You might consider upgrading the print & file server to the Optiplex 745 to take advantage of the various upgraded components that machine has to offer across the board.
If the performance of the file and print server is currently not an issue, I wouldn't worry about upgrading the CPU and take advantage ofthe Optiplex 745 as an extra machine for development or testing or some other purpose. Typically things like hard drive space and I/O speed are the issues with file and print servers.
If you get the service tag numbers from each computer and call Dell support, they would may be able to tell you whether or not the swap would be possible though.
