SNMP trap

Hello Jedi masters
I would like to be notified via email that the internet connection is down at one of our offices. Ive been told to use SNMP.
Im not too familiar with this protocol..
what program will be most effective?
Any suggestions.

* Im not clear how this works. if the net is down, how will it notify me?

Hi ... not quite as simple as that.

A few of the steps required would be:

1> Your router that has the internet connection on it has to support SNMP and trap sending.  What kind is  it?
2> You need something to receive and act upon the trap (i.e. an SNMP Trap Receiver).  WhatsUP comes to mind.  Typically this software is run on a machine that's always turned on and used for your network management.
3> Your Trap Receiver should be able to be configured for alerting.

Millscl:
I have a Zywall 5 and im no too sure if it supports SNMP and trap sending. This may be a good reason to get a Cisco Router ( amoung the millions of other reasons to get a cisco Router).

Would I be able to install WhatsUP "sender" on a server on the Network, and have the recieving end on the server over on my end?

That is a fairly robust little box for a SOHO environment but I've personally never configured one but it looks to support SNMP trap sending.

WhatsUP - Yes - as long as the Zywall can see the windows box it shouldn't be a big deal.

Why can't you just use ICMP?  A very simple Nagios install will do this. If all you want is to know if the far router is up or down, that should be good enough
