Question

1680 x 1050 Resolution (in)compatibility with Dell D630

Asked by: evilgiraf

I have a Dell D630 for work and yesterday purchased a TFT monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW) for use in my home office which can also be used on my home PC.  The problem it seems is that the D630 does not support horizontal resolutions >1440 pixels so I cannot support the native resolution of the monitor (1680 x 1050).  Works fine on home PC.

I was thinking that as long as the D630 could run at 1440 x 9000 or even 1280 x 800 it would work fine however it does not:  the d630 only gives the option for 1440 x 900 when it's own screen is operating i.e. lid open and even then the screen on the 2232BW is not correct (regardless of whether I enable black borders or not).  1280 x 800 is not even an option.

I am currenlty running 1400 x 1050 but details are not crisp and lack definition which is hurting my eyes.

Is there some software/driver that can overdie the settings of the graphics card (Intel Mobile 965) ?
Thank you for any advice.

FYI: The d630 has latest graphics and monitor drivers and latest bios.

if you use the display clone setting (same display on monitor and laptop lcd), monitor can't display any different resolution
if this is the case, you have 2 options

1. select the display to use ONLY external monitor
2. select extended display, then you can configure the monitor for a higher resolution.

hope this helps

kaygroth2:  See attached screen dump of display properties

msgopakumar:  I am not running the system with clone setting normally as when I close the lid of the laptop the system switches to external monitor only.  I was stating that I can access 1440 x 900 only in clone mode.  If I switch to Single Monitor mode (for the 2232), this resolution disappears.

You should first access bios and enable the option extend video. Then try again see if it works.

also, you should be using the intel graphics driver tab to change the resolution instead of windows native tab.

The GMA X3100 graphics adapter in the 965 Express chipset supports resolutions up to 2048 x 1536, so you should be able to use your native resolution with the proper drivers as long as the BIOS doesn't preclude this setting.    Just to be sure this isn't a BIOS issue, you might want to update to the latest A09 BIOS (which was just released on 16 April):  http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R183451&SystemID=LATITUDE%20D630&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=13457&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=9&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=250673

The slider on your posted Display Properties image clearly extends well to the right of the 1440 x 1050 resolution you're using => what are the additional options to the right of that?   If there are NO widescreen resolutions shown, then the issue may be a problem with the DDC communications with the monitor.   Try re-installing the monitor driver to be sure the video adapter "knows" that you have a widescreen monitor attached.

Hi garycase and thanks for the response.

I agree with everything you have said.  I have installed the latest drivers and BIOS (see original post).
I have uploaded two further screenshots;
 - 1. taken at 1400 x 1050 and showing the intel graphics with allowed resolution shown in drop down tab.
 - 2. taken when resolution changed to 1680 x 1050 and you can see my problem - the desktop extends beyond the monitor limits.  This picture was created by cropping the selection at 1400 x 1050 px.  So although the information is displayed at 1680 x 1050 there are 280 px outside of the monitor width.

I have looked into the BIOS but see now options in particular relating to resolutions.

P R O B L E M   S O L V E D

I cannot belive that I hadn't tried this:  set resolution to 1680 x 1050 and then used the monitors auto adjust feature.  All solved!

Thank you guys for all your help and I will split point if that is okay with you.

Have a good evening
