Adjusting Display on Monitor

I recently bought a Samsung 22 inch wide screen monitor. I cannot get it to work in a way that is satisfactory.

I'm using Wondows XP. The installation instructions said to set screen resolution to 1680 x 1050. I did that. Fonts are tiny or not sized the way I like on prcatically any application. Some are too big & show as bold, others too small, almost impossible to read.

Internet Explore is really messed up. For example, see the attached images (screen captures) of how the Experts Exchange display appears in the browser after a question is posted. Note the bottom image (ee3.jpg) is what should be upper left.

Is there any way to fix this or just take the monitor back?
