Question

Video Card does not show images with DVI port, but does with VGA ports Why?

Asked by: Seoulkid

Hi Guys

I just bought a Samsung LCD (Model T220).  The computer I have is pretty good, its a Dell Inspiron 530.  Anyways in it has a Video card from Nvidia  GE Force 8600.  This card has only 2 DVI ports and no vga ports.  The samsung has a DVI port and a VGA port.

I put the DVI port with cable and connected it to the computer via the video card, nothing showed up.  The monitor would just have its monitor power button blink.  Luckily for me, I have a vga converter which I used in one of the DVI ports and it worked.  The problem is that it stays in Analog.  It will not work with a DVI port.  When I connect with the DVI port it just shows that blank screen and I know that the computer is already booted up, because I'll change back the to the VGA mode and it will work instantaneously.

The monitor did come with a driver which I did install and can see its been recognized by the computer in the Display panel.  However, sometimes when I do install it and reboot and go back to the display panel it show a Generic Model again (this is only when I connect with a VGA port DVI converter)

I've also tried to reinstall the video drivers but my computer is Vista, so when I boot up the computer automatically reinstalls the video card regardless.

I've also tried to connect with the other port (since there are 2), but I've had no luck.

My two questions (which are probably just one) is how can I make my computer use the DVI ports and how can I keep it in Digital Mode and not Analog.

Thanks

You need to press the source button on your monitor to switch to the DVI input.

I do not have a source button on the monitor.  The Monitor itself changes from digital to Analog.  There is only an information button on the menu screen of the monitor and it doesn't allow a change to be made.

This picture is taken directly from the T220 manual.  The buttons are located on the right hand side of the monitor (you have to turn the monitor to see it).  It's button number 4.

Wow, I was fiddling with those buttons last night and I didn't see that button.  I will check back with you tonight.  Thank you for your help so far.

Okay so I checked the source button, and it did change the monitor to Digital mode. The problem is that the monitor says check cable connection on it (obviously because the VGA cord is in the computer)  I tried to switch it while in that mode, however it didn't work.  It just stayed black.

Actually there was something very interesting.  When I take out the VGA monitor cord from the computer Vista makes this noise (I guess its the type of noise where you take out your USB from the computer something like that).  When I put the DVI cable in, I get no noise or prompt or anything, it just stays black with the power button flashing.

Thanks for the response so far.  Could I get some more help please!

Thank you!

make sure that you are plugging the DVI cable in the same place that you plugged in the VGA converter.... the second port is for a secondary monitor (which can be enabled in display properties)

by: SeoulkidPosted on 2008-12-03 at 19:13:48ID: 23092399

Yeah

That I'm already aware of.  I've tried both ports just to test and troubleshoot.  However that is not the problem. I believe it has something to do with recognizing the monitor because the DVI cable when connected to the computer doesn't make that connection noise in Vista as it does with the VGA cable connected there.

Can I get some help here please:)

Update!

I took it to a friend of mine to look at.  He said that he can't figure it out.  We tried a new DVI cable.  That didn't work.  We tried it on a different computer and that didn't work either.  Mind you he didn't have the driver install on the computer, but he also said it should just work regardless.

Could it be the monitor is just not working properly?

Thanks

I'm thinking that... you're friend is right, it should just work.

Update!

So I took the monitor back with my computer to the store.  Tried different monitors with DVI slot, and they didn't work either.  Same blank screen with the power button flashing.

So it wasn't the monitor.  What could it be?  Video Card?  Should I reinstall that?  How do I do that so that its a fully reinstalled video card?  Should I take it out of the slot?

Thanks

The monitor works when you plug the VGA adapter into the dvi port and it doesn't when you plug the dvi cable directly into the same port?  That is very odd.  Because it's the same signal from the port.  I'm not sure your next step.  It seems to me the video card is working ok.  I guess you can try another video card and see if that fixes your problem.  Sorry I'm not better help.

Hey Again

Looks like I found the problem?  I'm not quite sure, but I exchanged the monitor I had and got a new one.  This time the cable for the DVI port was a bit different.  Instead of an array of pins that make a rectangle, there was an array of pins to make 2 square shapes.

Anyways, the monitor worked.  So I guess it was the cable that I was given in the first place.

I researched the cable and the one given to me before was DVI-I dual link which didn't work, but when I used a DVI-I single link it worked.  You can see pictures on this site about it.

thanks for all the help!
