No, that's why I tried it on the laptop.
All I have is another iMac (all in one) but I guess that wont work.

Browse All TopicsI have just bought a brand new PC. It's just the base unit. I already have a 23" monitor from before which has a DVI lead.
The computer which I bought does not have a DVI output. It has a VGA input port and a VGA output port (one male and other female).
So I bought an adapter from ebay DVI (F) to VGA (M).
I connected my new computer with my Sony screen and the screen would not do anything. It did not recognize the computer.
I changed the input to 1 and 2 on the monitor but still no luck.
So then I tried connecting the new desktop to my laptop with a VGA cable to see if I can get it to display on the laptop (monitor 2).
That didn't work either.
I'm using the Computer Female VGA port to connect with the monitor.
It's not connecting.
Can someone help? I have checked all the cables multiple times.

Is the connector a DVI-D, DVI-A, or a DVI-A? D=digital, a=analog, i=universal; can carry a digital or analog signal both ways. What type of signal does the computer's video card produce?
If you have DVI-D and your VGA signal is analog, it will not work. Or if you have a DVI-A and your VGA signal is digital, it will not work. They are not interchangeable.
If they are different signals, you will need a convertor box.
Hope this gets you moving in the right direction.
Here is a really good website to look at as well: http://www.datapro.net/tec
An active external converter box (one that processes signals and isn't just wire correction) probably runs around $200 to $300.
There are some chezzy USB to DVI adapters that start at around $100 but don't expect a great picture from one of those. They are basically a USB powered video card and they don't have much RAM.
.
I think a converter box is too expensive. I'd rather get a graphics card to fit the monitor.
The new system which I just bought is this:

The monitor I have from 2 years ago is the Sony P232W Monitor:

I just need to know if there is an adapter which will do the job for me.
I bought a DVI-I adapter but that doesn't work. I don't know if the adapter is faulty or if its something else.

It converts DVI[analog] pinout to VGA[which is also analog] pinout.
It does not convert DVI[digital] to -anything- [analog].
To do that requires an electronics circuit called a D/A converter.
DVI is just a connector.
The signal is based on the the circuit it's attached to.
THE SIGNAL going through a DVI connector can be:
Analog only [DVI-A]
Digital only [DVI-D]
Both digital and analog. [DVI-I]
Only DVI-I and DVI-A signals can be converted to a VGA without a circuit involved.
That other circuit is essentially a video card that doesn't fit into a slot and that costs more than a middle or low end video card.

Now that I know the model:
The DVI connectors on you monitor are DVI-D. - Digital only.
Not compatible with VGA without another circuit involved.
Spec sheet says it has VGA connectors also.
THAT port would be analog and compatible with your video card without any adapter at all.
Just need a VGA-VGA cable.

and to this part:
>> So then I tried connecting the new desktop to my laptop with a VGA cable to see if I can get it to display on the laptop (monitor 2) <<
PC's VGA port is 'out' to a monitor.
Laptops VGA port is 'out' to a monitor. (As in monitor 2)
- They are both outputs only so your results are to be expected.
- In fact it's possible to damage something that way.

do you have another monitor you can test?
this would be the first thing to do. To work out if its the mon, or the comp.
