Question

Change resolution on laptop for external monitor

Asked by: Chantal-reed

I have a vista 32-bit laptop running vista business. I have just purchased  a new NEC 24" LED screen to work as an external monitor for it. When i first installed it was picked up the correct max resolutions for the screen without a problem, however there was a flicker on the screen. So i then plugged the screen into another laptop (XP) to check whether the flicker was due to the screen or the laptop - no flicker.
Then since I have re-plugged it into my vista laptop, the max resolution it shows in the display settings is that for the laptop, not the screen.... How do I correct this? Also what do I do about the flicker, as it is a LCD i cannot change the sreen refresh rate, it s set at 60 hertz.

It may not be possible, depending on the restrictions of the video card for your laptop. However, check the manufacturer's site for updated drivers, and see if that adds any new resolution settings.

Thank you but I have the updated drivers for the graphics intel card and the screen itself. I know it is possible because the resolution was on the max 1920 x 1200 before I  plugged the screen into another laptop and then back into this one....  Any other ideas?

by: NDevelopmentPosted on 2009-08-06 at 06:11:02ID: 25032827

What sort of connection are you using for the monitor? VGA? DVI? HDMI? Also, I know it's trivial but have you tried restarting the laptop since the last time you plugged the monitor in?

by: Chantal-reedPosted on 2009-08-06 at 06:15:35ID: 25032878

Well NEC call it 15-pini mini D-sub male to DVI-A, but looks like VGA to me and it is analogue and yes i have restarted the laptop both with the screen plugged in, and then without and adding it later.... i have uninstalled its drvier and reinstalled it as well... still no joy.

You're trying to use this screen as a new monitor for the laptop, rather than something like extending the laptop screen, correct? If so, make sure that in the Display Properties for the screen, the "This is my main monitor" checkbox is selected. Hopefully this will enable the video hardware to recognize the full resolution capabilities of the monitor.

by: Chantal-reedPosted on 2009-08-06 at 06:25:28ID: 25032986

It is set up as the main monitor and I have tried it as a single monitor, dual and extended, still the same  outcome

by: NDevelopmentPosted on 2009-08-06 at 06:36:48ID: 25033120

Oh boy, that really is a headache. The most confusing part is that the monitor worked at that resolution before, and now is unselectable. I'm afraid I don't have any more answers, those are the only things I could think of. Hopefully someone more experienced in this area sees this question and is able to help, but I really don't know what's wrong.

Apologies & best of luck.

ok thanks for tyring anyhow

you need to close the lid of the laptop for the video card to use the native resolution of the monitor, if you have both monitor and laptop lid open, it will stay at the limit for the laptop LCD.

make sure under power profiles, advanced settings, that you set WHEN LID CLOSED, choose DO NOTHING from the drop down list, as with most laptops, this engages hibernation mode.

thank you.  I have found the solution myself -  i have deleted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/mobilepc/tmm/vidlist files - which has reset everything and i can now pick up the maximum resolution for the monitor. the next problem that has come up however is to do with the intel graphics  - when i click on Advanced settings under the Display settings it comes up with "igfxrvc bodule has stopped working, which I think is to do with my intel graphics card - which i have just updated, but still comes up with this error....
Any help on this one would be fantastic...
thanks

sounds like you may have to re-install the Intel driver software manually.  remove any listing in add/remove programs, and re-apply.  you should get the latest driver from the laptop maker, not from Intel's own site if you can avoid it.

getting the chipset driver won't hurt either, as it will allow the system to recognise all the Intel components, such as audio, video, drive controller etc.

ok thanks, i will try all that and come back to you. take care

by: Chantal-reedPosted on 2009-08-07 at 04:19:26ID: 25041546

Quick question on the above answer - I have downloaded but not yet installed a chipset update from the manufacturers website - however the graphics update on their website is older than the graphics update that i previously got from Intel and have previously installed - should I go back or leave this as it is?

by: IainNIXPosted on 2009-08-07 at 05:12:58ID: 25041836

personally, given the issues you have had, i would revert back to the manufacturer's drivers, as they may have customised the chipset in some way, only use the Intel ones with caution and if you really need to.

by: Chantal-reedPosted on 2009-08-07 at 06:29:32ID: 25042429

thanks done that, but still hasn't corrected the igfxrvc module - so not sure what to do next - i know there is a igfxrvc.exe file in the system, but cannot find anywhere to download a new one in case this is corrupted...

I can however now get up the monitor adjustment section of Naviset (software that comes with NEC screens, although it wont see the monitor (everything else does) just says "No DDC/CI monitors found". very stange when my graphics card does support DDC/CI as confirmed by the intel website and everything else is working!

by: IainNIXPosted on 2009-08-07 at 07:27:55ID: 25043035

if you unpack the Intel drivers file (Winzip or whatever you use), you should be able to extract all the files and one of them is bound to be the one you need.

search your drive for this file to get an idea of the date stamp and size of it, perhaps even renaming it and re-installing the software.  These will likely be in the SYSTEM32 folder.

ok thanks, will try that.
