LCDs display black by polarization of crystals to block transmission of light. This technique is not 100% effective , so some light gets through and black is not really black. You should also know that your eyes take some time to adjust to darkness and actually have a sliding scale of contrast, so when dark gray is positioned side by side with white, it can appear to the observer as black. You already know CTR and LCD are different technologies, however, you also knew answer for the question. It is not limiation of technology, it is the way it is.
