The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Running Multiple Monitors on a Dell Optiplex GX270 with an Intel 82865G graphics controller

Tags: gx270, dell, optiplex, monitors
I am trying to run a multiple monitor setup on my work computer.  It is a Dell Optiplex GX270.  The video card is an Intel 82865G Graphics Controller.  I believe that it is just the one card, but that I have two outputs.  I have one monitor connected to the blue VGA port and another monitor connected via a DVI-D cable to the white DVI port.  Both monitors appear to be connected properly.

My question is regarding the Dual View.  Every single troubleshooting guide I have seen mentions opening the Display Propoerties -> Settings and configuring the two monitors from there.  But the second monitor does not display under the Settings tab.  I am able to set-up the Twin Monitor display where the exact same image displays on both monitors.  But what I want is where I extend the single desktop across both monitors.

Does my current computer/graphics card setup not support Dual view? How can I check?  Any advice on completing the multiple monitors setup?  Thanks.

So the one connected to the VGA connector is working but the DVI one isn't?  Have you tried connecting just the DVI based monitor to see if it works standalone?

Also, just to be sure, are both the VGA and DVI outputs on the same video card, or is one on the motherboard and the other on a removable video card?

Both monitors seem to be working.  When I restart the computer, both monitors will display something.  It is after I do the windows login on the VGA monitor, that the DVI monitor stops displaying.  And, as I mentioned, if I set-up a twin monitor display, both monitors function and show the exact same thing.  If there is something else I need to check, let me know.  But I believe that both monitors are working properly.  In fact, the DVI monitor is the monitor that I used to have connected to my VGA port...so I know that it works.

RE video card.  I have to apologize for being somewhat of a novice.  Is there a way that I can tell this by looking at the back of my machine...or do I have to take something apart.  Fact:  The blue VGA port is located bunched in with the other typical hook-ups: the printer port, the mouse and kepyboard slots and so on.  The white DVI port is located further down the back of the machine (I stand my PC vertically)...so...it looks like it may be in a removeable card slot...?

It sounds like you are trying to run dual displays on two different video cards. Your computer has a video card built into the motherboard (blue plug by printer port etc.), and you also have another card in either an AGP or PCI slot. The odd thing is, many AGP/PCI-E cards that support DVI-D will also have a VGA-out (blue).

It is not likely (though not impossible) that you can enable both cards at the same time. You can check in your BIOS to see if there is a setting to enable both, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Your onboard card uses the AGP bus, and as soon as you plug a card into the AGP bus, it will typically disable the onboard.

In your display properties, when you click on settings, does it show one or two monitors? If only one, then windows is only recognizing one output.

**Just to add**

If your video card (down by expansion slots) has only one output, you may just have to get a new video card to run dual displays. If you are not a gamer, you can purchase a card for fairly cheap. Check out NewEgg.com

MotoCrazy: On Display Properties --> Settings it only shows the one monitor...so, as you suggested, it is likely only recognizing the one output...I'll check the BIOS as you suggested...

What I have is one old AGP 4x card and and a card with a Nvidia chip, which is designed for multiple monitor display. I plan this month to install another nvidia card and monitor. XP is capable of handling 10 monitors.

I am also running an NVidia 6200 on AGP4x I got from NewEgg for like $80. NVidia has some great features for running multiple displays.

I checked in the BIOS...and i was out of luck there.  So, it does look like the easiest solution is to get a new card.  Thanks for the help everyone.
