How do I connect an external monitor to a laptop computer?

I attempted to connect my Dell 19" flat screen external monitor to my Dell Latitude D610 laptop computer but it did not work. It was my understanding that all that is required is to connect the two via the laptop's printer connector. Please advise. Thank youStart Free Trial
