Question

monitor screen does not work

Asked by: artismobile

How can I tell if the screen is out or it does not power up?  If it is the screen, how can I fix it or find a cheap place to buy a replacement? It is an old computer but I would spend the time to practice a repair.

the first you do is test with another monitor.
get it from a friend, or relative for testing

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-08-30 at 04:52:19ID: 22351421

As nobus states, use an external monitor. This will show whether the video card is working as well as the laptop itself. You can switch to the external monitor by holding the  Fn key and pressing f4 as per this info link. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00213448&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&rule=36291&product=61329

To help along, here is the video guides for disassembling this model.

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 06:52:23ID: 22377160

O.k. with this model, I tried the external monitor and FN F4. and nothing happened.  There is a "half Moon" button that I pressed to make sure it was not the brightness control.  This screen is totally dark.  I can hear the fan come on.

by: nobusPosted on 2008-09-03 at 07:30:18ID: 22377627

i would look on ebay for that model, and buy a used, or abad one (but with a good screen) if you want to replace the display.
note it can be the video card (mobo) too (since the external does not work)

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 08:34:22ID: 22378381

It is an old spare computer.  How easy is it to replace a video card and find out?  I have built Desktops before.  Never opened a laptop

by: nobusPosted on 2008-09-03 at 09:39:36ID: 22379079

>>  How easy is it to replace a video card    <<  in most, there is no separate video card - you replace the mobo

by: nobusPosted on 2008-09-03 at 09:40:26ID: 22379089

can you boot into the bios?
do you see the screen then ?

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 09:42:26ID: 22379107

Tell me how and I will try that.  I believe I hold a key down on start up?

by: nobusPosted on 2008-09-03 at 09:53:48ID: 22379202

normally, it is the Del key - but some others use F10, Esc, F2, F12 check your manual for the correct one

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 10:09:52ID: 22379350

Del key...alt key...nothing, f2 brightness on this one f 10, nothing

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-03 at 12:00:45ID: 22380684

According to the manual you press F2 when you see the HP logo during startup.
Page 82 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/lpi05117.pdf

And according to this manual on page 28 you use the Fn+F5 in order to switch from the lcd to the external monitor( I know the other one said Fn+F4)

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 12:26:34ID: 22380976

ok. tried f2 nothing. fn holding f5, nothing.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-03 at 16:53:14ID: 22383119

Then there are deeper problems than the screen I'm afraid.
Are you getting any fan noise or leds lighting up of any sort when you attempt to start it?

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 17:46:08ID: 22383385

Fan noise and the fan shifts in intervals.  Power up lights only

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-03 at 17:59:33ID: 22383450

Sounds like its starting, perhaps its the video that's at issue. That would be a motherboard replacement.
Can you hear the hard drive spinning up?

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-03 at 18:51:49ID: 22383809

Well, it starts and the power light comes on.  The fan stays on. I can hear the clicks of the hard drive coming on then it stops. You know like if the screen was on and the computer was stuck in an error screen.  The DVD drive opens on command, lights up and will close.

by: nobusPosted on 2008-09-03 at 23:33:32ID: 22384666

time for a repair or replacement..

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-04 at 04:19:51ID: 22385966

Kinda what I thought.  I'll look at the manual you provided and see what it takes.  It is an old computer but one of my daughters wants a laptop. I have built desktops several times, but I have never opened a laptop, so I'll have to see if it's worth it.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-04 at 05:38:55ID: 22386527

When you do , try reseating the cables that run to the LCD and the ram. Not that it will do much I'm afraid, as there is no external output, but something to try.

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-04 at 07:48:38ID: 22387992

I did find this motherboard.

HP PAVILLION N5000 OMNIBOOK XE3 FOR PENTIUM III CPU MOTHERBOARD F2111-60962

I don't know if the motherboard includes a video card, but that price is not too bad for a replacement if it fixes the problem. The software is Windows ME. (remember that one?) I have XP somewhere. I'm sure I'll need memory.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-04 at 11:48:08ID: 22391172

I believe the XE3 is a sister laptop to this one. I would wait until you do the disassembly in order to get a part number of the motherboard in order to cross reference them with the XE3 motherboard.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-04 at 11:51:13ID: 22391215

What does your comment "I'm sure I'll need memory" mean. I suppose you mean XP requires 128MB and that there is already ram in this laptop just not enough for XP.

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-04 at 13:12:09ID: 22392153

Right, with my Freshman knowledge of laptops, I would think I would need more if I upgrade to XP.  Good tip on the sister board. I'll disassemble tomorrow for the numbers. Any idea where to look? Can I use the same memory and processor from the old MB in the new one I get or is everything molded together in laptop motherboards?

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-05 at 17:28:58ID: 22404874

If they are similar there should be no problem with using the components from on to the other. First get the old motherboard out and once it is identified you can check the specs against the new one.
The  Pavilion XH5xx  (x's denoting model numbers not shown) seems to be another sister laptop.

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-06 at 22:29:16ID: 22410259

O.k. I just disassembled everything.  Actually it was kinda fun never doing it before. The motherboard is
 N32N6 LA-736B 6L Rev 1.0 (Pavilion N5425)
 Video Card N32NN6LS-73C  Rev 1.0 (HPS3SXGA)
 Harddrive HDD2154 20G 4200rpm (Toshiba)
 Memory (2) 128 MB 100mhz
 Processor 133?

It is an ADM. Where should I start? With no visual on screen and the sound of the hard drive and fan, should I start with a replacement video card?

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-07 at 09:45:06ID: 22411989

Looks identical. Not much of a price. I have never ordered anything on E bay. Maybe I'll open an account.  So, I don't think it's the inverter. (like my other laptop you have graciously helped me with, it has a faint picture) It may be the video card?

Thank you.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 10:17:40ID: 22412076

Possibly the video card but just as likely the motherboard if the hard drive isn't spinning up and no other signs of life other than fans and power led are showing.
At this point it's hard to say, perhaps reseating the video card can help.

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-07 at 11:14:32ID: 22412231

perhaps reseating the video card can help.

That would be worth trying.  It's hard to tell if the hardrive was spinning or not.  I would like to say it was because I could here a click now and then along with fan increasing decreasing. I'm not opposed to putting everything back together to see if reseating the video card resets it. If it doesn't, I could start with a new video card.

Does it have to be that particular video card or is an upgrade possible?
Is 516 all I can have as ram for this motherboard?
Is that the fastest CPU this motherboard can handle?
I'm sure it can take a bigger maybe faster Hardrive but if it can't be upgraded further, I may just see if the reseat works. Always at the dividing road...buy new or fix.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 11:37:52ID: 22412307

Well, therein lies the problem. Laptops are so proprietary that its almost impossible to say if one can upgrade certain components without some exhaustive cross referencing.
I believe I've found the proper part number for the video card in the HP part surfer support section-->F2409-60911
http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Laptop,Part,F240960911.aspx

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 11:46:04ID: 22412333

Could you take another look for a model number on the bottom case of the laptop. It would look something like this number.
F4038H

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 11:56:40ID: 22412366

Actually the model numbers for the AMD N5470 are F2407M and F2407MR

I am confused by the reference you made to the motherboard number --> Pavilion N5425 which is another model of laptop. Any way this laptop could have been refurbished with another motherboard at some time?

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-07 at 12:15:16ID: 22412423

F2407N (Not Pavilion N5429) Sorry. don't know where that came from.

This was bought new from the company. N32NN6LS-73C rev 1A is the correct motherboard number.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 12:20:43ID: 22412439

OK lets get this straight.
F2407M  not 2407N right?

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-07 at 12:59:28ID: 22412584

F2407M is correct!
That's on the bottom of the case.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 13:47:43ID: 22412791

You will have to match the motherboard to the one you have by seeing if it has a modem, and lan, or any combination of these components.

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-07 at 14:03:27ID: 22412863

No longer supplied I guess means they don't carry it anymore?
O.k. I will start with the video card to see if that cures it.  If not, I'll try the MB

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 14:13:26ID: 22412915

You can use those part numbers to do a search on google or in ebay in order to find these parts through third partys.
For instance.
video card --> http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Laptop,Part,F240960911.aspx
2 motherboards--> http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Pavilion,N5470,F2407M,Laptop,Parts.aspx

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-07 at 14:17:56ID: 22412938

Sorry those links only give the starting point for the parts. Here are the proper links

1st motherboard with modem only
 http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/searchresults.aspx?pn=F2409-69005

2nd motheboard with modem and lan
http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/searchresults.aspx?pn=F2409-69004

video card http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/searchresults.aspx?pn=F2409-60911

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-07 at 16:17:57ID: 22413342

Ok.  I guess this will satisfy my quest!  What is lan and where can I tell if my motherboard has a modem?

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-08 at 07:51:43ID: 22417935

There should be a  connector for attaching an ethernet cable(LAN-Local area network)
the modem should also have a connector for a telephone line.
The position of these connectors are shown in this picture as number 12(modem) and 13(LAN)

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-08 at 09:39:18ID: 22419102

I have both the modem and LAN so the second suggestion will work for me. Thanks for the picture.

by: sparkmakerPosted on 2008-09-08 at 09:46:55ID: 22419176

No problem, I saved typing a thousand words if the old adage is correct.(A picture is worth....)

by: artismobilePosted on 2008-09-08 at 10:12:28ID: 22419386

...but video speaks a thousand pictures. The video you sent to me to assist the dissasemble was priceless. Well, for the age of this computer and the price of a new motherboard (and the chance option with a used one) I'm going to order a new video card and re-assemble the computer and install it.  If it doesn't work, I'm only out $50.00 or $30.00 if I go with a used one.  Plus, I get the experience of building a laptop, which I have never done before.
