Question

Setting up convergence Dell P-992 (Sony Trinitron)

Asked by: ginovino

I Have a Dell P-992 CRT and the convergence needs to reset. I see shown red & blue shadowing of colors around some of the type fonts.

I seem to recall that there was a screen where you had the ability to align the convergence both in vertical and horizontal modes separately.  There would be three color lines  and you would adjust until no "ghosting" of colors appears above and/or around the lines. I can't seem to find these screen anymore.

This monitor has served me well and continues to provide a range of colors and refresh rates that is 2nd to none (IMHO). I would hard pressed to move to a LCD while this unit continues to work effectively.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Also have you messed with the settings on the monitor itself?
http://server4.nodevice.com/downloads/476e2ed2e7d7cf155d2a04a4cb14de7c/p992.pdf

there's the other manual...
maybe there is a reset?  or maybe you will need to play with the settings a bit?

Also have you tried just for the heck of it to change the resolutions to something lower or higher to see if the problem continues?  or worsens? or gets better?  or even goes away?  etc...

I have gone through all of the controls and settings and fail to find the screens I recall. As for the resetting the refresh rates and image sizes. That has no effect of the "haloing" of type fonts. It is simply a convergence issue. Overtime the color guns have changed their output slightly, in the same fashion a Color TV's colors need to readjusted over time.

After doing very heavy duty surfing, I have come find out that my symptoms are very common with Several Sony Trinitrons and especially the p992.

There appears to be two methods of repair, one is component replacement and the other is the addition of an external device to control an "eprom".

I have written the author of the article and await a response.

This is the solution offered by an expert familiar with the Dell D-992 (Sony Trinitron) monitor in under discussion:

Subject: Re: Ordering Dell interface unit

Is the monitor's problem mainly one of excessive brightness? You should first locate the four pin interface connector.  On the back of the monitor find the small plastic pop-off cover allowing access to the connector.  If it's there, gently pry it off and locate the 4 pin interface connector.  If the plastic cover is not there, then the monitor case would have to be removed.  It is not difficult to remove the case.  The connector is located at the edge of a circuit board.  The interface connects to that 4 pin connector and to the 9 pin serial port connection on your PC.  After you have located the connector, if you wish to go ahead, you may pay by Paypal (credit cards accepted) or money order.

Paypal is:

Or money order to:
