Got stuff off her computer, fine - no problems when cooked to another computer so not video card, must be faulty screen.
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI'm helping a friend with her laptop - trying to get some documents off before sending off to Dell (this is a Dell Studio book). When her computer boots up there are thin color lines running veriticall over 95% of her monitor as well as black horizontal lines running across 30% of the screen. There are a three major lines in black that are curve around and through the vertical and horizontal lines. The computer will boot up to Vista but I can only see 5% of the left hand side of the screen - and not enough to see enough directories or to drag files to a flash drive nor enough room to see cmd prompt to copy any files to a flash drive. The thing is that when we turn off the monitor, I can still see a ghost image of many vetical lines and the swirl lines. Could a problem with a video card permently etch in both vertical and/or swirl lines? What could this be? I've tried an external monitor but it's not seeing this.... Thanks.

Sounds like a faulty screen. You'll need to use an external monitor to save your fridnd's stuff. Try hooking up the external monitor before you power-u the laptop.. Also, some computers don't detect an external monitor automatially and you have to press some combination of keys to select - like Fn + a key.. Look in the computer's documentation (if any not on the computer) or google it...
