If the above doesn't work straight away you may also need to toggle your monitor setting.
Most laptops have the 'Fn' key and F4 (or another F key with a monitor/screen icon) to toggle between laptop/screen modes.

On most laptops, you can do this very easily with the press of two buttons. Without knowing the model, I can't tell you which specific button it is, however:
Look for a symbol of a monitor on the function keys.
Find the blue Fn key (usually bottom left somewhere)
Press and hold the Fn key, and press the key with the monitor symbol on it.
Typical operation is thus:
First press: Laptop display
second press: both displays
third press: External display
the cycle then repeats.
Right click on the desktop, select Properties.
Click Settings
Right click on the monitor with 2 in the box and select Primary if you want this to have your start menu, etc. Tick the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor if you want an extended desktop (drag windows between monitors).
If you use extended desktop you can move the monitors 1 & 2 around in the grey box so they mirror your physical setup (ie, if monitor 2 is on the left drag it to the left of monitor 1).
