Screen fades in and out on Dell Inspiron 8600

My Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop screen fades in and out.  I can connect an external monitor that works fine.

I can also switch back and forth from both the built-in screen to the external monitor without a problem but the when using the built in screen, it will automatically switch to the external after a couple of minutes.
