Question

What equipment is needed to set up information monitors in two lobbies?

Asked by: ArmyGroo

I have been asked to implement display monitors in our lobbies on which we can update the status of appointments.  What hardware (basic lcd monitors 37' ?) do I need?  What software would I use to control the messages being displayed on the monitors?

AV is definitely not my specialty so any helpful pointers or ideas are welcome.

Whats the application? Is this clinical/medical appointments your talking about?

by: ArmyGrooPosted on 2009-11-06 at 10:15:30ID: 25761522

Yes, I am looking to show whether physicians are on-time with their appointments in both of our lobbies.  And also have the ability to show other patient related messages on-screen.  IE availability of flu appointments.

If you already have PC monitors, I recommend a nifty little bit of hardware called EVGA UV Plus+ UV16 USB 2.0 Video Adapter.  It plugs into the USB ports of the PC, and can be either it's own monitor or mimic another display.  They're less expensive and easier to install then dual video cards.  You can have two of these, then the only cables you would need is either a USB extention or DVI extention to run from the PC to the monitors.
As for the software, it depends on the cost and how often you update the information.  If there are frequent updates and you have the budget you might want to get a custom app built.  Personally I think you can get away with MS Powerpoint, using the slideshow to rotate between the on-time notices and the patient related messages.  Build the slides so that it's easy to modify with the current information.  The trick is the desktop background should be set as an image of one of your generic slides, so when you end the slideshow the patients will see is the image while you are making changes.
If this PC is your work PC as well, I would recommend having one of the monitors close by enough you can see it to work on it, or invest in a third adapter and third monitor to sit beside your "working" monitor.

Willing to buy custom app and using new monitors.  Doing a google search and not really knowing what I am looking for I see monitors with built in network cards (basic built in pc)

When I ask for a custom app to be built, what am I looking to include?

Any links to sites which have examples of custom interfaces?

Usability is more an issue than cost.  If it is easy to update then it is going to save me money and support in the long run.

I had a look for software that would do what you're looking for, no such luck.  You could try guru.com to see if you can hire a programmer to build an app.  Basically the app would need to display information to a specific screen, and you need to be able to update that info on the fly without stopping the display.

You could also look for companies that deal with digital "point of purchase/point of sale" displays.  they might have solutions for you.

You might try software for churches that allow simple powerpoint type building of pages for quick display.  Check out http://www.longsav.com.  You also need an amplified Y for VGA if you are running VGA cable.  That will take the signal coming from your PC, amplify it, and split it to 2 or more monitors.

Good ideas for poeple with little budgets.  I ended up getting a consult from an AV company.  They are going to install two 46" tv's which connect to a contect server and media server via Cat5.  The media server configures images sent to it by the content server and the content server has many windows configurable by a web interface gui.  All of it secured by user permissions.

Cost about 7k to 12k depending on your needs.
