what is required to use a touchscreen instead of keyboard and mouse?

Asked by zephyr_hex in Touch-Screen Displays, Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, Personal Computers

my environment is windows-based.  all client pc OS is windows xp pro.

we run MS Office applications and an ERP system.

what would it take to be able to use a touchscreen instead of keyboard and mouse?  is this mechanism for control based on the screen itself or OS or what?

for example, can i go buy a touchscreen monitor and connect it to a pc on my network and wah-lah, no more keyboard and mouse?  do i have to worry about compatibility between the ERP system and touchscreen?  or are applications blind to the input hardware ... in much the same way that it doesn't matter if you are using a bluetooth mouse or wired mouse...all applications run the same way regardless of the mouse hardware...because the OS is handling the input stuff...
