Optiplex 755 Serial port problem

Com1 on my machine is in use by something.  I have talked to Dell and the solution is to uninstall the com port and reboot.  This works temporally, and I have to repeat the same steps.  Can anyone tell me what is using the serial port.  I have tried to use the sysinternals port monitor and it can not open the port. OS is windows XP

How do you know its in use?
Any sync software installed or Fax on system? Can you try COM2 or COM3? You can also delete COM1 in Device Manager see if that helps?

When attempting to open the port with hyper terminal I can not, indicates that something else is using the port.  I have nothing using the port.  I have tried it on a friend's 755 PC, same thing happens.
So, hyperterminal fails when it asks you what port to use for the connection?  Can you change the ports' resources in the BIOS so it becomes a different COM port (preferably COM2 as it uses a different IRQ than 1 or 3)?
There is only one come port on the PC.  I want to find out what is wrong with it.
Yes, there is only one physical COM port on the PC, but you can change the resources it uses in the BIOS so that it becomes COM2 or COM3 or COM4.  There is probably nothing wrong with the port but something else may be using the resources required for COM1.  Usually in a case like that it is easier to just change the resources of the COM port.
On the resource tab there is a change setting button, when clicked I get the error "cannot modify the resources in this config.  Try a different config.".  Same thing in a different conofiguration.
Still would like to find out what is using it if any thing.  You are correct the port does work.  Id I delete the port and reboot I can use it when it first boots but a some point later I can not.  Not sure how long it takes for the problem to occur.
You don't make the change in Windows, you enter the BIOS by pressing the F2 key when you firt turn the computer on.  Then look for Advanced Settings or Onboard Devices - not sure which since I don't have a Dell in front of me.
In the BIOS I have change the com1 from auto to configure as the specific compe port addess and interrupt.  It iws working right now.
Is Hyperterminal working now?
