Question

eSata and Windows 7

Asked by: jodyfaison

I can't get my old Seagate eSata exterior hard drive to load on my Window 7 pc. Are they not compatible? I've downloaded the new drivers, etc. But no luck.

Does the drive appear under Disk Management? It may be a permissions problem or as simple as a drive letter missing.

Right click COMPUTER and choose MANAGE. Click on disk management. Does it appear there? Does it have a drive letter?

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-20 at 21:30:01ID: 25380324

No I just double checked. I have so many drives, and virtual drives, and re movables, that it had occurred to me that it just couldn't find an available letter. But it doesn't show an eSata anywhere on the graph or table.

by: grayePosted on 2009-09-23 at 15:42:02ID: 25408764

Yeah, but...  eSata devices typically show up as SCSI devices.   I bet it's there...

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-23 at 22:04:37ID: 25410207

I'll check again, for SCSI thanks graye

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-23 at 23:18:54ID: 25410467

I don't see any SCSI at all, and I know my CD-rom is SCSII, hmm. Not in Device Manager either.

by: grayePosted on 2009-09-24 at 08:26:15ID: 25414344

So, show is what *is* in the Device Manger under the "Disk Drives" and "Storage Controller" sections

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-24 at 09:56:34ID: 25415400

Yes, I thought earlier I should send a screen shot, and maybe you can find it. I'll get some right up here. thanks again.

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-24 at 10:14:50ID: 25415550

Ok, on the 2nd device manager shot,  two usb root hubs are missing from bottom of screen. Other than that, I think you see everything in the 3 shots, unless there's another console I'm not aware of.

I don't know what that SCSI CD-rom player is in device manager. I assumed it was from Daemon lite, but I don't know. Could it be an eSata in disguise.?

by: centervPosted on 2009-09-24 at 21:20:40ID: 25420009

Win7 will not show empty root hubs by default.
I believe the setting is under folder views.
Sorry, not on Win7 now.
Also, go to system properties, manage, storage  and see that your drive has an assigned letter.

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-25 at 00:01:58ID: 25420550

Ok, I've been working it here awhile but I'm a little lost. Where is the "folder views" you refer to?
I've unplugged all my usb misc and down to my 3 hard drives. I can find storage under computer management. But nothing there, and still nothing in STORAGE device manager. I do see traces of it, showing up as  missing, with two drive letters., This

or type folder in search box, click folder options/view

Ok, cool. that's where I thought you were, but not sure....
Sad to report though, no luck.
I tried re-installing the driver software with the exe from Seagate. It thinks its installed and would only repair, modify or uninstall. It has a utility feature though, that doesn't recognize an e-sata drive

I went to Seagates site, and I'm afraid maybe the driver or card or both or just not supported in vista or win 7!

by: centervPosted on 2009-09-25 at 13:20:51ID: 25426884

ouch!

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 08:50:58ID: 25440359

Oh, I usually spread out points a little better. So Sorry
I got confused and thought that centerv and I were the only ones working on this problem. I should have scrolled back to refresh my memory.
I choose that solution because I think the truth is I'm out-of-luck since the drive seems to be supported only by Win XP.
I'll redo and divide points more evenly among participants, if that's an available option.
I certainly appreciate everyone who contributed!

by: grayePosted on 2009-09-28 at 11:52:21ID: 25442104

I am NOT vying for points, but the explanation of "not compatible with Vista/7" seems more than just  a little a incredible to me.

SATA-based hard drives use Microsoft's own built-in "mass storage" driver... so of course there is no vendor driver available.  The driver for the SATA ports themselves comes from the motherboard vendor.

I'd be more inclined to keep searching for the root cause of the problem... bad eSATA port, bad eSATA port driver, bad disk, bad enclosure, bad cable, etc.   For example I'd recommend that you test same disk, enclosure, and cable on another system (both WinXP and Win7)

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 13:18:18ID: 25442909

ok, thank you graye, I really appreciate you following up on this, as I really need the data that's on the eSata now.
I don't have an XP in the family right now, other than a virtual machine, not sure if that would work.
I do have a Vista machine with a built in eSata port, maybe that's the next thing to try.
For clarity, this eSata 500 gig drive exterior drive came bundled with the card. I wonder if it's the card that's no longer supported.

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 13:22:17ID: 25442958

I'll also see if the motherboard site has some info/drivers for the port/card.

by: centervPosted on 2009-09-28 at 14:18:27ID: 25443481

More to chew on!  Who makes the card?  It's not necessarily made by the mobo or drive manufacturer.
There should be identifying stickers on the card itself.
Keep in mind also that many manufacturers are not releasing drivers yet as win7 is still not official.

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 14:43:05ID: 25443659

ok, card is made by promise technology eSata300 card.
I'll follow this up, as the motherboard site was not helpful.

by: centervPosted on 2009-09-28 at 14:49:53ID: 25443714

promise is generally right up there with their drivers.
I'm sure they'll release win7 drivers but in the meantime,
check the link for your model card available drivers

Also check the compatibility of your card and mobo

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 15:02:24ID: 25443809

Yes, I was there. I don't see my motherboard on their compatibility list, I don't think. The list is a little confusing. Well not that confusing it's not there, I just don't know what this North and South bridge stuff is, as it's also in my Bios.

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 15:03:39ID: 25443820

I have their vista drivers now and may give it a try anyway. Unless someone says not to.

by: grayePosted on 2009-09-28 at 15:10:23ID: 25443932

No, please do... there's no difference between the "driver model" of Vista and Win7

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-28 at 16:08:51ID: 25444406

well, well, well, there it is...
I had removed it from the mobo for awhile, and just now re-installed it there, booted up accidentally into the guest profile, and it showed up, after windows loaded the drivers. Nnow it's also in my main profile...
Can't explain it really. Maybe not seated well before?
Thanks for your persistence!

by: centervPosted on 2009-09-28 at 17:38:34ID: 25444961

That's great!  graye was the persistent one so just reassign the points.
The most important is that you got your data.
Cheers  :-)

by: jodyfaisonPosted on 2009-09-30 at 11:31:27ID: 25461823

thank you centerv, I don't think I have the option of reassigning points, says it's "closed.'
?
