Question

connecting a blackberry to exchange

Asked by: mrBrightside

hi all,

i have 2 users wanting to use blackberries for mobile access, i dont really understand it all....however i have said we can sort their email, which i do not know how to syncronise with our exchange 2003 server....so what i have done instead is create a blackberry email account user@blackberry.orange.co.uk and just mascarade this as their normal email.....steps i have done to achieve this:

set up user account with blackberry email
checked they recieve emails to phone from that account (which works fine)
set reply email to the users actual account (user@mydomain.com)
auto bcc (user@mydomain.com, i will then create a rule to move all incoming emails from user@mydomain to be moved to the sent items)
send as email address to be user@mydomain.com

so from the above steps if a user sends an email to anyone else it comes up as user@mydomain.com and not user@blackberry.orange.co.uk....

to sort it out so they recieve the correct emails i have created a contact in the exchange A/D called userblackberry hidden it from address lists so network users dont get confused. set email contact to smtp email address user@blackberry.orange.co.uk and then in exchange general on the actual user, change the forward option to userblackberry and deliver to both inboxes....

it doesnt really work though, if i send it from the network it sends 2 messages the actual email and then another with a winmail attachment and blank email.....if i send it from a hotmail or my own external account it does get delivered but sometimes blocks up in the server queue and wont send messages on, anyone got a clue as to why they would block up in the queus? please bear in mind i know nothing about queues

thanks

Have you looked into getting a Blackberry Enterprise Server? There are many different levels of software and since you only have 2 users currently maybe the BlackBerry® Professional Software Express would help you out a great deal. The software is free and the first license if free. I'm not positive, but I believe each additional license is (approx) $100 (one time fee) for up to 30 users.

Here is the link to the software: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/server/offers/professional_express.jsp#tab_tab_overview.

Hope that helps.

ok thanks i will give this a shot. i dont really understand how it all works though.....do you have to connect to a wifi to get the emails delivered or does it come through the service providers telephone network? because this blackberry free account works fine on its own and i am not connected to a wifi network

Not sure about the UK, but here in the states, you can connect directly to the users mailbox if you go the the RIM website (different depending on carriers but this on is for AT&T http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/solutions/email-messaging/bis-login.jsp) and just set it up using the wizard, all you have to know is the users E-Mail address and password, and maybe the server address.

No, it comes straight though the Telcos wireless, same as voice calls no need for Wi-Fi.

I would use BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) this is AT&T https://att.blackberry.com/ but every provider has their own version of it, you can set up the Blackberry to connect to your e-mail server directly to the users mailbox without the need to forward mail or anything, we have about 10 users doing precisely this, (long story but they didn't like T-Mobile, so we have BIS for AT&T and BES for T-Mobile).

sorry slightly confused again, this is a totally alien technology to me, its like a caveman getting into a fighter jet, i havent got a clue what to do....it wont let me use att.blackberry BIS because it says it is reg to another service provider, so i have to use orange, this is the account i created origionally and tried all the forwarding etc but it doesnt work properly, takes ages for the device to recieve emails and sometimes they dont recieve at all......how can i set it up so they can access their inboxes directly without an internet connection and without blackberry server software on my network?

There is no way to receive over the air mail if you do not go though a blackberry enterprise server or a BIS account.  You can install the desktop software if you want to just sync manually though.

We have users who get email, directly without forwarding, from our exchange server using BIS. I just logged into the website set up the mailbox, but instead of setting up a blackberry mailbox, I just set it up to get mail directly from our exchange server using OWA. It's basically the same as you would set it up to get mail from Gmail or Yahoo, it's just getting it from your corporate Exchange server.

You don't have to use the full BES. Use BES Express. It is free for the first device and then the cost of the CALs for the additional CALs. Orange should be able to sell you the CALs for about £70 each. You can have up to 15 Blackberry devices on the BES Express. Go above 15 then you will need the full product. However I have never paid for the full BES. I simply tell the mobile phone company that I want BES free, and if I don't get it I will go somewhere else. Normally need at least ten devices to get that, particularly if you already have phones with them.

Try and avoid the BIS route or the desktop software as that will not really give you sync. It is a horrible kludge of a solution that I think is done just so that the users can pose with device rather than actually use it.

BES can be a pain to install, you must follow the instructions. Or better still get a consultant in to do the install for you and show you around the software. You have full control over the devices with BES. Shouldn't' be more than half a day.

thanks for the help, i phoned orange and we managed to set up a succesfull account that connects using OWA, however i still cannot get it working correctly.....there is often a delay in the delivery of the items to the users mailbox and sometimes they dont get delivered at all, i have looked in exchange queue and there is a queue with several messages in that i have sent as test emails to see if it was working.....any ideas what could be wrong?

by: armerdanPosted on 2008-03-12 at 06:12:11ID: 21105497

I always thought that if they are still in the exchange queue, than they have not left the exchange server yet.

by: SembeePosted on 2008-03-12 at 12:44:52ID: 21109945

The queue means exactly that - the messages have queued for delivery. That could be caused by anything. You need to look at the queue to see why the messages are staying there.
